Tools – Supplies Needed

  • Fresh coolant (consult your owner's manual for the right type & volume)
  • Drain pan
  • 8mm or 10mm socket (radiator shrouds, sometimes drain bolt size)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Clean rag
  • Protective gloves & goggles
  • Torque wrench (optional, for shroud reinstallation)

Step 1: Allow the Engine to Cool

Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. Scalding coolant under pressure can cause injury. Always let your 2023 CRF250R cool down completely before starting this job.1

Step 2: Remove the Seat – Side Panels

  • Remove the seat (typically two bolts at the rear).
  • Remove the radiator shrouds and side covers for easier access to the radiators and filler neck. Refer to your specific model's layout for bolt locations.

On the 2023 CRF250R, carefully remove the shroud bolts – Honda recommends using 10 N·m for shroud bolts A/B and 5.2 N·m for shroud bolt C during reinstallation.2

  • For a deeper clean, fill the system with distilled water, reinstall the drain bolt, start the engine briefly, and repeat the draining process. This removes debris and old coolant residues.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Bolt

  • Before filling, confirm the sealing washer is in place and in good condition.
  • Reinstall and hand-tighten the drain bolt. Torque to the manufacturer's specification if possible.

Step 6: Fill with New Coolant

  • Slowly pour fresh coolant into the radiator until it reaches the bottom of the filler neck.
  • The 2023 CRF250R capacity is approximately 0.98 US qt (0.93 liters) when just changing coolant.4
  • Squeeze the radiator hoses gently and tilt the bike left and right (about 20°) to release air bubbles.2
  • If the fluid level drops after airing out, top off the radiator.

Step 7: Reinstall the Radiator Cap & Panels

  • Install the radiator cap securely. An improperly installed cap can cause coolant loss and lead to overheating.4
  • Reinstall the radiator shrouds and seat, torquing bolts to the specified value.

Step 8: Warm Up – Recheck

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Shut it off and allow it to cool again.
  • Once cool, recheck the coolant level, topping off if necessary. Minor coolant loss through the overflow tube (0.7 – 2.0 US oz) is normal.4

  • The CRF250R has a compact radiator design – proper burping (air bleeding) is essential to prevent air pockets.
  • Always use a recommended, high-quality coolant to protect magnesium and aluminum radiator components.
