The Honda CRF300L Rally is engineered for adventure and reliability, but regular maintenance is key to long-lasting performance. A coolant change is a straightforward service task you can do yourself with basic hand tools and a bit of care. Here's a step-by-step guide specific to the 2022 CRF300L Rally, including tips unique to your model. Always perform this service when the engine is cold and on level ground.

What You'll Need

  • 5mm hex key (Allen wrench)
  • Drain pan
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Replacement coolant (Pro Honda HP Coolant or high-quality silicate-free ethylene glycol antifreeze)
  • Funnel
  • Clean rags or shop towels
  • Optional: single-use crush washer for the drain bolt, rubber gloves

1. Remove the Right Side Fairing

  • Locate and remove the screws on the right side fairing using the 5mm hex key. The Rally model has additional plastics compared to the standard CRF300Ltake care to keep all fasteners organized.
  • There are plastic pins (push rivets) around the radiator. Gently press the centers to release, then pull them out. Some areas also use Velcro–separate these by hand.

2. Access the Radiator and Expansion Tank

  • With the plastics off, you can see the radiator cap and the coolant reservoir (expansion tank). For the reservoir, a 10mm socket may be needed if you want to fully remove it for cleaning, though this is usually optional.

3. Drain the Old Coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the water pump area (bottom right side of the engine). The coolant drain bolt is visible and easily accessible on this model, minimizing teardown time.
  • Remove the drain bolt. Allow all coolant to empty. You can expedite flow by removing the radiator capopen slowly to relieve pressure.
  • Inspect the crush washer on the drain bolt; replace it if deformed or worn.

4. Flush if Desired

  • If the coolant is heavily contaminated, add distilled water, reinstall the bolt, run the bike briefly, and drain again. Repeat until clear.

5. Reinstall Drain Bolt

  • Screw the drain bolt back in (with a new washer if needed). Tighten securely, but do not overtighten.

6. Add New Coolant

  • Using a funnel, pour new coolant into the radiator until full. Also fill the expansion tank to the "UPPER" mark indicated on the tank with the bike upright.
  • Honda specifies using Pro Honda HP Coolant or any high-quality, silicate-free ethylene glycol coolant with corrosion inhibitors for best performance and radiator protection.

7. Burp the Cooling System

  • Reinstall the radiator cap. Start the bike with the cap on for a minute, then gently rev while watching for bubbles or drops in the coolant level (leave cap off briefly if safe to allow air to escape).
  • Stop the engine, let it cool for several minutes, then check/top off coolant in both the radiator and reservoir as air works its way out.

8. Reinstall Plastics

  • Reverse your steps to reinstall all fairings, screws, and push pins. Make sure plastics are secure and no hoses are pinched or misaligned.

9. Check for Leaks & Test Ride

  • Start the engine again, check under the drain area for drips, and monitor the temperature gauge or warning lights. After a short ride, re-check coolant level and add as needed.

CRF300L Rally Model-Specific Tips

  • The expanded fairing and cowling on the Rally increase time for disassembly–work gently to avoid damaging push rivets or scratching plastic.
  • Because the Rally is designed for distance and off-road use, always check for mud/debris around the radiator, as these can block cooling airflow.
  • Use only recommended silicate-free coolant to avoid premature wear in the system. Coolant change intervals: every two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.
