Preparation – Safety First
- Park the KLX230 on a stable surface & ensure the engine is cool to the touch. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine.
- Remove side panels and seat if necessary to access the radiator cap and overflow reservoir.
Step-by-Step Coolant Change
- Access the Radiator: Remove the radiator cap by pushing and twisting – treat it like an aspirin bottle. Set the cap aside. Locate the coolant drain bolt (typically on the lower side of the water pump housing).
- Drain Old Coolant: Place the drain pan under the drain bolt. Loosen & remove the bolt. Allow all coolant to drain thoroughly. If your KLX230 has a reservoir, remove and empty that too.
- Flush the System: Reinstall the drain bolt. Slowly pour distilled water into the radiator. Remove the bolt again to flush out remaining residue. Repeat as needed until water runs clear.
- Refill with New Coolant: Install and tighten the drain bolt to manufacturer spec (do not over-tighten – snug is enough). Using a funnel, pour the recommended coolant into the radiator until it reaches the base of the filler neck. Fill the overflow reservoir to the "Full" line if equipped.
- Remove Air Bubbles: Start the motorcycle with the radiator cap off. Let the engine idle and gently rev, watching for bubbles. Top off coolant as needed. Once bubbling stops, install the cap.
- Heat Cycle & Final Check: Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature (the fan may cycle on). Shut off and let the bike cool completely. Check the coolant level in both radiator and reservoir. Top off if necessary.
