Changing the coolant on your 2020 Honda CRF250L ABS is an essential part of routine maintenance. Honda recommends replacing the coolant every 24,000 miles or every two years, whichever comes first. This prevents overheating, corrosion, and ensures your engine operates at peak performance. The process is simple with basic tools and a few specific steps unique to this ABS model—especially considering the configuration of the bodywork and radiator location.

What You Need

  • Silicate-free engine coolant (pre-mixed 50/50 is best)
  • 5 mm Allen key
  • 8 mm and 10 mm socket and ratchet
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Drain pan
  • Replacement crush washer for the drain bolt (single-use)
  • Small funnel
  • Clean rags or paper towels

Step 1: Remove the Side Panels

To access the radiator, remove the plastics surrounding the radiator and coolant reservoir. On the left side, take out the upper 5 mm Allen screw. On the right, remove four screws plus the two plastic retainers. If you have an aftermarket skid plate, use the appropriate tool to remove it alongside the lower plastics.
Set the hardware aside; you will need to reinstall all panels after the job is done.

Step 2: Locate and Remove the Reservoir and Radiator Cap

Using a 10 mm socket, unbolt the coolant reservoir from the frame for easier access. Then, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the retaining screw from the radiator cap. With the engine cool, slowly remove the cap to relieve any built-up pressure.

Step 3: Drain the Coolant

Position your drain pan beneath the water pump on the lower right side of the engine. Using an 8 mm socket, remove the coolant drain bolt. Let the coolant fully empty – this may take a minute. Now is the time to replace the drain bolt crush washer so the system will seal properly when you reinstall it.
For a thorough drain, you can tip the bike gently from side to side to release any trapped coolant.

Step 4: Flush (Optional but Recommended)

If you want to maximize cooling system cleanliness, pour a small amount of distilled water through the open radiator filler neck and allow it to flush the remaining coolant from the system. Repeat until the water runs clear, then drain completely before proceeding.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Bolt

Install a new crush washer and torque the drain bolt to manufacturer specifications. Do not reuse the old washer, as it will not seal reliably.

Step 6: Add New Coolant

Using your funnel, pour new silicate-free premixed coolant into the radiator until it reaches the filler neck. Also, fill the coolant reservoir to the upper mark. Reinstall the radiator cap and secure any caps, covers, or panels you removed.

Step 7: Bleed the Cooling System

Start the bike and let it run at idle until the cooling fan cycles or the engine comes to operating temperature. Keep an eye on the reservoir level and top off if needed. This step works out any trapped air bubbles.
After the engine cools, recheck coolant levels in both the radiator and reservoir and top off if necessary.

Reinstall Bodywork and Check for Leaks

Replace all plastics, screws, and the skid plate, tightening everything evenly. Run the engine once more and inspect for any coolant leaks at the drain bolt, hose connections, and around the radiator cap.

Model-Specific Notes for 2020 CRF250L ABS Owners

  • The ABS model shares its cooling system design with the standard CRF250L, but ensure you keep electrical connectors dry when working around the ABS wiring harness near the radiator.
  • Always use Honda-spec, silicate-free coolant, as other types may corrode the aluminum radiator and water pump components.
  • Access to the coolant reservoir may be tighter due to ABS module placement—take extra care when removing and reinstalling plastic panels.
