Step-by-Step Coolant Change
- Let the bike cool completely before starting—hot coolant can scald and create pressure in the system.
- Remove the radiator cap (after loosening the small retaining screw, if present) to release any pressure. Place a rag underneath to catch drips.
- Remove the left side panel using a 12mm socket. This provides better access to the water pump area.
- Locate and remove the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover (10mm bolt near the bottom). Place the drain pan beneath as coolant will flow quickly.
- If your DR-Z has an air bleed screw on the water neck (hex head/Phillips slotted), open it a few turns. If there is a top radiator air bleed screw on the left radiator, crack that a turn as well. This step helps remove air and ensures a full drain.
- After draining, reinstall the drain bolt and snug it gently–do not overtighten.
- (Optional: For a more thorough flush) Fill the radiator with distilled water, reinstall the cap, and start the engine. Let it idle until fans kick on or the thermostat would normally open. Turn off, let it cool, and repeat steps 3–6 to drain any remaining old coolant and rinse the system.
- Slowly fill the right-hand radiator with fresh coolant. Air will escape from the open bleed screws. As coolant flows from the water neck bleed, close that screw. Continue filling until fluid seeps from the left radiator bleed, then snug that as well. Finish filling the right radiator to the top.
- Lean the bike carefully to left and right several times. This helps burp trapped air into the radiator neck for final topping-off.
- Reinstall and secure the radiator cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle until warm (watch for leaks—stay with the bike the entire time). Watch temp; if the bike gets hot quickly, shut down & check for air pockets.
- Let the bike cool, reopen the radiator cap, and verify coolant is at the top. Add as needed. Top off the coolant overflow bottle (usually behind the left side panel) to the “Full” line – about 1 inch of fluid is sufficient.
Post-Service Notes for the DR-Z400SM
- Ride the bike, let it cool, then recheck coolant in both radiator and overflow tank for the next two rides. Trapped air sometimes escapes after the first heat-cool cycle.
