- Pre-mixed 50/50 motorcycle coolant (avoid automotive coolants with silicates or phosphates)
- 12mm and 10mm socket set
- Phillips screwdriver
- Small catch pan

Step-by-Step Coolant Change for the DRZ400S

Remove the Seat and Side Panels
Use a 12mm socket to unbolt the seat and any plastic side cover blocking access to the radiator cap and water pump. -
Ensure the Engine is Cool
Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine to avoid burns or injury. -
Remove the Radiator Cap
Remove the small screw holding the radiator cap flange. Then, use a rag to open the radiator cap slowly and release any residual pressure. -
Drain the Old Coolant
Place your catch pan under the water pump cover on the right side of the engine. Remove the 10mm drain bolt and washer at the lowest point. Allow coolant to fully drain. -
Open the Air Bleed Screws
Locate the air bleed screw on the top front of the cylinder head water neck (if your bike is fitted with oneit may not be present on all DRZ400S models; if your water neck points straight up, you likely do not have a bleed screw). Open it a few turns. There is also a bleed screw on the left-side radiator near the cap; loosen it for faster, cleaner draining and refilling. -
Flush if Switching Coolants
If you are switching to a different coolant type, use compressed air (never just water) to thoroughly flush the cooling system for best performance and to avoid residue mixing. -
Replace the Drain Bolt
Once drained, reinstall the drain bolt with its washer. Torque to spec (do not overtighten). -
Add New Coolant Slowly
Use a funnel to fill the right radiator with fresh pre-mix coolant. Coolant will bubble out of the bleed screws as air escapes. When coolant comes from the water neck bleed screw, snug it back down. Keep adding coolant until it emerges from the left radiator bleed screw, then tighten it as well. -
Bleed Trapped Air
Lean the bike fully left, then right, several timesthis helps any remaining air reach the radiator neck. Top off again as the fluid level drops. -
Top Off & Replace Radiator Cap
Once you are sure all air bubbles are gone and the radiator is filled to the top, replace the radiator cap and the retaining screw. -
Check the Overflow Reservoir
Add coolant into the overflow tank up to the "Full" mark (about 1 inch or 2.5cm in the bottle is typical). -
Warm Up the Engine
Start the bike, keep it stationary, and let it reach operating temperature. Watch the temp and never leave the bike unattended, as trapped air can cause overheating quickly. Shut off after a few minutes, allow to fully cool, and re-check the radiator and overflow levels, topping off as needed. - Reinstall Seat and Panels
