Tools – What You Need
- 10mm socket and ratchet
- Phillips screwdriver
- Funnel
- Catch pan or suitable container for old coolant
- Motorcycle-specific, silica-free coolant (avoid automotive coolant containing silicates)
- Distilled water (for flushing, not tap water)
- Shop rags
- Protective gloves and eye protection
Drain the Old Coolant
- Ensure the engine is completely cool before starting. Never open the radiator cap on a warm or hot engine due to pressurized hot coolant.
- Remove the seat and side panels using a 10mm socket where required to access the radiator cap and reservoir tank.
- Place your catch pan under the bike, directly beneath the water pump cover—this is where the coolant drain bolt is located, typically on the lower right side.
- Slowly remove the radiator cap and (if equipped) the bleeder bolt at the top of the opposite radiator. This prevents vacuum lock and allows fluid to drain quickly.
- Remove the drain bolt on the water pump cover and let the coolant flow into your container. Tilt the bike gently side to side to help purge any trapped fluid.
- Also drain the coolant from the overflow reservoir by disconnecting it if needed.
Flush the Cooling System (Optional but Recommended)
- Flush the system with distilled water: Re-install the drain bolt, fill the radiator with distilled water, start the engine, and run briefly. Let cool, then drain again.
- Repeat the flush if the drained water appears dirty.
Fill With New Coolant
- Replace and torque the drain bolt securely.
- Using a funnel, fill the radiator slowly with new coolant until it reaches the bottom of the filler neck. Gently squeeze the radiator hoses and rock the bike to expel air bubbles.
- Fill the overflow reservoir to the proper "Full" mark.
Bleed Air From the System
- With the radiator cap off, briefly start the engine and watch for air bubbles escaping from the filler neck. You may need to top off the radiator as air escapes and the level drops.
- When the bubbles stop and the level stabilizes, return the cap securely and check for leaks.
- Always recheck the coolant level after your first ride as trapped air may escape, causing the level to drop.
KLX250-Specific Notes
- The KLX250 features a compact cooling system. Always use non-silicate, aluminum-safe coolant to protect internal engine passages.
- The reservoir is tucked behind a side panel and can be tricky to access—be patient when removing and reinstalling panels.
- If your model is equipped with a fan or digital temp gauge, verify both function when the engine reaches operating temperature after service.
- Proper coolant level is paramount, as air pockets can rapidly lead to overheating and potential engine damage.
