How to Change the Coolant in a 2018 Beta 430 RR-S

Preparation

  • Let your bike cool down completely before starting. Coolant expands when hot and could spray if the radiator cap is removed beforehand.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and use gloves to avoid skin contact with coolant.
  • Gather necessary tools: replacements coolant (check your manual for type – Beta recommends a silicate-free, premixed coolant), a catch pan, screwdrivers, pliers, and clean rags.

Step 1: Remove Seat and Fuel Tank Side Shrouds

  • Use the appropriate tool to remove the seat bolts and side shroud fasteners.
  • This exposes the radiator cap and the top of your radiators for easiest access.

Step 2: Access the Radiators

  • Disconnect the fuel tank if needed – some users find it helpful to move the tank out of the way for better access to the radiator cap and hoses. Carefully disconnect the quick-connect fuel line and unplug any electrical connections you must move around.

Step 3: Drain the Old Coolant

  • Locate the coolant drain bolt at the base of the water pump cover on the right side of the engine.
  • Place a catch pan beneath the bolt.
  • Unscrew the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure.
  • Remove the drain bolt and allow coolant to flow out completely.
  • If desired, gently rock the bike side to side to ensure a full drain.

Step 4: Flush (Optional for Thorough Maintenance)

  • If your coolant is contaminated or maintenance has been delayed, flush the system by pouring distilled water into the radiator until it runs clear from the drain. Drain thoroughly after flushing.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Bolt

  • Check the drain bolt o-ring or washer for wear – replace if needed.
  • Tighten bolt to the recommended torque spec from your Beta manual.

Step 6: Refill the System

  • Use a funnel to slowly fill the radiator to the base of the filler neck with new coolant.
  • For the Beta 430 RR-S, the capacity is slightly over one liter, but always fill carefully and don't exceed the max level.
  • Do not mix coolant types. Use only what Beta specifies; mixing different formulas can reduce effectiveness or even cause gelation.

Step 7: Bleed Air from the System

  • With the radiator cap off, start the engine and let it idle.
  • Gently rock the bike side to side to encourage trapped air to escape.
  • Watch for bubbles; top up the radiator as needed.
  • Once the engine is up to temperature and air bubbles are gone, turn off the engine.
  • Wait for the bike to cool, then check and top off the radiator and overflow reservoir as needed.

Step 8: Reassemble and Inspect

  • Reinstall all components: seat, side shrouds, fuel tank, and any disconnects.
  • Start the engine and inspect for leaks during warm up.
  • Re-check coolant level after first ride, as any last trapped air will now have purged.

  • This Beta uses a composite radiator cap and plastic overflow tank. Never overtighten or use tools – hand tighten only to prevent damage.
