What You Need

  • Fresh coolant (refer to your owner's manual for specifications, but a high-quality motorcycle coolant, not automotive coolant, is required)
  • 10mm socket or wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Clean funnel

  • Rags

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Let the engine cool. Never attempt to service the cooling system when the engine is hot to avoid burns and possible injury. Cooling system components remain under pressure even after engine shutdownalways wait until fully cooled before proceeding.
  2. Remove the seat and right-side trim as needed to access the radiator and hoses. The seat can usually be released by removing a couple of bolts at the rear subframe.
  3. Place the drain pan directly below the water pump drain bolt. The drain bolt is on the lower right side of the engine case. Use a 10mm socket to remove the bolt carefully.
  4. Release system vacuum by removing the radiator cap before loosening the drain bolt. This helps coolant drain quickly and prevents spills. Remove the coolant reservoir cap as well for better airflow.
  5. Allow coolant to drain completely. Once drained, inspect the old coolant for contamination; milky or rusty fluid could indicate other maintenance issues.
  6. Reinstall the drain bolt and torque to manufacturer specs (be careful not to overtighten and strip the threads).
  7. Fill the system with fresh coolant through the radiator neck. The 701 Enduro holds approximately 1.2 quarts (1.1 liters). Fill to the top of the radiator, then fill the overflow/compensating tank up to the maximum mark, not above. Do not use tap water; distilled water mixed with proper coolant is recommended if using a concentrate.
  8. Start the bike and let it idle with the radiator cap off for a few minutes. This purges air bubbles. As the coolant level drops in the radiator, top off as needed, then reinstall the radiator cap.
  9. Check the overflow/expansion tank again after the short warm-up. Top off if necessary to maintain the level between the min and max marks.
  10. Inspect for leaks at the drain bolt, hoses, and around the radiator cap. Dispose of the old coolant according to hazardous waste guidelines.
