Step–By–Step Coolant Change Procedure

  1. Let the bike cool completely. Opening the radiator cap on a hot engine is dangerous.
  2. Remove the right side panel and any obstructing plastics. Use the 5mm Allen key to remove the single screw on the radiator side, and remove 4 screws and two plastic retainers from the right side panel. If you have an aftermarket skid plate, use its appropriate tool to remove it.
  3. Access the radiator cap. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the retaining screw and carefully open the cap.
  4. Detach the coolant reservoir bottle. Remove the two 10mm bolts to free it up.
  5. Position your drain pan underneath the bike below the water pump.
  6. Remove the drain bolt and washer. The coolant drain bolt is usually on the lower part of the water pump, which is on the right side of the engine. Use the 8mm socket to remove it. The old crush washer should be discarded.
  7. Let coolant fully drain. To ensure a clean flush, gently rock the bike upright from side to side.
  8. Flush with distilled water if desired. Replace the bolt temporarily, fill with distilled water, and run the engine for a few minutes. Repeat the drain process.
  9. Install new crush washer and reinstall the drain bolt. Tighten securely but do not overtighten; follow torque specs in your service manual.
  10. Refill radiator with new coolant. Using your funnel, slowly pour in fresh silicate-free coolant until the radiator is full. Fill the coolant reservoir bottle to the upper line.
  11. Bleed air from the system:
    • Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes with the radiator cap off. You may need to "burp" the system by gently pinching and releasing the radiator hoses to help trapped air escape.
    • Watch for bubbles escaping and keep topping up as needed.
    • Once the bubbles stop, stop the engine and let it cool. Add more coolant if needed, then fit the radiator cap securely.
  12. Reinstall reservoir and plastics. Ensure all fasteners are replaced correctly and not overtightened to avoid stripping the threads.
  13. Check for leaks and proper coolant level. After your first ride, recheck the coolant level in both the radiator and the reservoir tank once the bike is cool and top up if needed.

Special Notes for the CRF250L ABS Model

  • The ABS components are not affected by the coolant change, but avoid spilling coolant on electrical connectors and ABS sensors.
  • This model requires a single-use crush washer on the drain bolt. Never reuse the old washer–replace it every coolant change for leak prevention.
  • Some aftermarket skid plates may block access to the drain bolt or panel bolts. Remove as needed for a clean and easy job.
