How to Change the Coolant in a 2017 Honda CRF150R: MotoSport Guide

Routine coolant changes ensure your 2017 Honda CRF150R stays cool under pressure–whether you ride trails or race the track. The CRF150R uses a high-revving, race-inspired engine, making proper cooling absolutely essential for optimal performance and engine lifespan. Unique to this model, the compact radiator and cooling system tolerate minimal contaminants and require careful attention during service.
Tools & Supplies Needed
- Fresh, motorcycle-approved coolant (avoid silicate-based formulas for aluminum radiators)
- Distilled water (for flushing)
- Drain pan
- 8mm socket or wrench (for water pump drain bolt)
- Flathead screwdriver (for radiator cap)
- Copper or crush washer (replace if damaged or old)
- Funnel and clean rags
- Protective gloves and eyewear
Step-by-Step Coolant Change Procedure
- Prep the Bike: Make sure the CRF150R is cool to the touch. Place the bike on a stand or level surface. Remove the right-side radiator shroud to access the radiator cap.
- Remove the Radiator Cap: Using a screwdriver, carefully loosen and remove the radiator cap to relieve any pressure in the system.
- Drain Old Coolant: Place the drain pan beneath the water pump. Locate the lowest bolt on the water pump cover (on the right side of the engine case–this is the coolant drain bolt). Use the 8mm socket to remove this bolt, along with its copper/crush washer. Let coolant fully drain into the pan.
Tip: Removing the radiator cap helps the coolant drain more quickly by preventing a vacuum effect. - Flush the System (Recommended): With the drain bolt out, pour distilled water through the radiator filler neck to flush any debris or old coolant. Continue until clear water runs from the drain point. Allow to drain completely.
- Reinstall Drain Bolt: Inspect and, if needed, replace the copper/crush washer. Reinstall and tighten the drain bolt securely without over-torquing.
- Add New Coolant: Using a funnel, refill the radiator slowly with new coolant up to the base of the filler neck. Do NOT overfill.
- Bleed the System: Lean the bike left and right gently to help release trapped air. Squeeze radiator hoses if accessible. Top off coolant as needed.
- Check for Leaks & Warm-Up: Reinstall the radiator cap and shroud. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for leaks at the drain bolt and hoses. Shut off the engine and let it cool–top off the radiator if the level drops.
CRF150R Model-Specific Notes
- No coolant reservoir: Unlike some bigger bikes, the CRF150R does not use a remote overflow reservoir, so keeping the radiator topped up is essential for performance and longevity.
- Flush after overheating: If the bike has overheated or the coolant has turned brown/discolored, flush the system thoroughly with distilled water before refilling.
- Coolant check interval: For race-use or frequent rides, inspect your coolant before each outing and change it at least once a year for peace of mind.
- Narrow radiator passages: Contaminants or mixed coolant types can quickly clog the CRF150R's small radiator and lead to overheating.
Changing your CRF150R's coolant is straightforward, but attention to detail makes a world of difference for this high-performance machine. Whether you ride hard or simply want to protect your investment, fresh coolant helps keep your Honda running cool through every lap and trail.
