How to Change the Coolant in a 2016 Yamaha YZ85

What You Need
- New coolant (silicate-free, motorcycle-specific or as recommended by Yamaha)
- Socket wrench – 8mm or 10mm for drain bolt
- Phillips screwdriver
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Clean water (for flushing, if necessary)
- Rags
- New drain bolt washer (recommended)
- Torque wrench
- Compressed air (optional for extra clearance when flushing)
Step-By-Step Instructions
- Let the engine cool completely.
Coolant is under pressure – never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. - Remove the radiator cap.
Use a rag to prevent spills. Opening the radiator cap makes draining more effective by preventing vacuum in the system. - Locate the coolant drain bolt.
On the YZ85, the drain bolt is typically on the lower side of the water pump cover on the right side of the engine. Place your drain pan underneath it. - Remove the coolant drain bolt & washer.
Use the correct socket to loosen and remove the bolt. Allow the old coolant to fully drain into the pan. Inspect the washer – replace it if damaged or as routine maintenance for a proper seal. - Flush the system (recommended if switching coolant types or if the coolant is heavily contaminated).
Reinstall the bolt and fill the radiator with clean water. Run the engine for a minute, shut it off, let it cool, and drain again. Repeat with clean water until it drains clear. For extra clearance, gently blow compressed air through the system to remove residual fluid (not required for every service). - Reinstall the drain bolt & washer.
Tighten to the specification listed in your YZ85 owner's manual. Using a torque wrench is ideal for sealing and prevention of overtightening. - Carefully fill the radiator with new coolant.
Use a funnel and pour the coolant slowly, allowing air to bubble out. Fill until the coolant reaches the bottom of the filler neck. - Burp the system.
Lean the bike slightly from side to side to release trapped air. If possible, gently squeeze the radiator hoses to move air bubbles up to the filler neck. Double-check the coolant level and top off if needed. - Secure the radiator cap.
Replace and tighten the cap firmly. - Run the engine and recheck.
Start the YZ85 and let it idle for a few minutes. Shut off the engine, let it cool, and check the coolant level again. Add coolant if necessary.

- The YZ85 features a simple liquid-cooling system – regular checks and maintenance are especially important for smaller, high-RPM two-strokes.
