What You'll Need

  • Ethylene glycol-based motorcycle coolant (safe for aluminum cooling systems)
  • Distilled water (if mixing coolant manually)
  • Drain pan
  • Ratchet & socket set
  • Large flathead screwdriver

  • New crush washer for the drain bolt
  • Protective gloves and rags

Step 1: Prepare the Bike

  • Ensure the bike is completely cool to avoid burns.
  • Remove the skid plate (if equipped) and left-side shrouds for access to the radiator and drain plug.
  • Place your drain pan underneath the water pump area at the bottom-left side of the engine.

Step 2: Drain the Old Coolant

  • Use a large flathead screwdriver or appropriate socket to loosen and remove the radiator cap–this will allow air in and coolant out.
  • Locate the coolant drain bolt at the lower part of the water pump. Remove the drain bolt and its crush washer–let the old coolant completely drain into the pan.

Step 3: Flush the System (Recommended)

  • Reinstall the drain bolt and a new crush washer, hand-tighten, then torque to manufacturer spec.
  • Pour distilled water into the radiator until almost full, reinstall the cap, and briefly start the engine for 1–2 minutes. Turn off, let cool, then drain the water using the previous step.
  • Repeat if residue remains in the system.

Step 4: Add New Coolant

  • With the drain bolt installed and tightened, pour the new coolant (or premixed 50/50 with distilled water) slowly into the radiator up to the filler neck.
  • Check and fill the overflow reservoir to the "Full" line.

Step 5: Bleed the System (Burp the Radiator)

  • With the radiator cap off, start the bike and let it idle several minutes. Gently blip the throttle a few times and rock the bike side-to-side–this helps remove trapped air.
  • Top off coolant as needed until the level stabilizes at the neck.
  • Install the radiator cap securely.
  • Double-check the overflow tank and refill to the "Full" mark if necessary after the engine cools.

Step 6: Inspect and Clean Up

  • Run the motor, check for leaks at the drain bolt and hoses.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly at a recycling center or auto parts store.
  • Reinstall side bodywork and skid plate.

Special Notes for the XR650L Owner

  • Always use a coolant compatible with aluminum components–never use plain water or car-only coolants.
  • The XR650L–unlike many water-cooled bikes–has a unique, compact cooling loop and no large radiators, so burping the system is critical to prevent hot spots.
