Supplies You Will Need

  • Glycol-based, silicate-free motorcycle coolant (premixed 50/50 or mix with distilled water)
  • Socket wrench set (8mm, 10mm sockets), 5mm Allen key
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Clean funnel
  • Replacement drain plug washer (crush washer recommended)
  • Catch pan for coolant
  • Paper towels or clean rags
  • Protective gloves and eyewear

Drain the Old Coolant

  1. Always ensure your engine is cold before starting.
    Caution: Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot–pressurized coolant can spray out and cause serious burns.
  2. Remove the right side panel and, if necessary, skid plate to access the radiator and water pump.
  3. Place your catch pan beneath the water pump area.
  4. Using the socket wrench, carefully remove the coolant drain bolt located at the bottom of the water pump. Allow coolant to fully drain.
  5. Remove the radiator cap to speed up draining.
  6. Inspect the crush washer on the drain bolt. Replace if deformed, to ensure a proper seal and prevent leaks.

Flush (Optional but Recommended)

If your coolant appears contaminated, flush the system with distilled water. Reinstall the drain bolt temporarily, fill with distilled water, run the engine briefly, then repeat the drain process.

Add New Coolant

  1. Reinstall the drain bolt with new washer. Torque to manufacturer spec (10 Nm is typical for Honda CRF models).
  2. Using a clean funnel, pour new coolant into the radiator filler neck until the coolant reaches the bottom of the neck.
  3. Replace and securely tighten the radiator cap.

Bleed the Cooling System

  1. Start your CRF250R and allow it to idle with the radiator cap on for several minutes.
  2. Watch coolant level and temperature–look for air bubbles in the sight glass or overflow line indicating trapped air working its way out.
  3. Shut off the bike, let it fully cool, then recheck and top off coolant to the filler neck.

Final Steps and Checks

  • Reinstall side panel/skid plate as needed.
  • Visually inspect for leaks around the drain bolt and hoses.
  • Ride your bike, then let it cool and check coolant level again. Small loss is normal (20–60 cm3 or 0.7–2.0 US oz), but excessive loss means further inspection is necessary.

CRF250R-Specific Notes

  • The 2016 CRF250R cooling system capacity at a coolant change is 0.98 US qt (0.93 L). Do not overfill, as excess will expel through the overflow.
  • This model is sensitive to overheating if the coolant level is low and the radiator cap is not tightened properly. Always double-check installation.
