  • Socket set (10mm recommended)
  • Drain pan
  • Pre-mixed motorcycle coolant (50/50 ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, non-silicate, pre-diluted with distilled water)
  • Clean shop towels
  • Protective gloves

Step 1: Prepare the Bike

  • Make sure the engine is completely cool before starting. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine – the system is pressurized and could cause burns.
  • Stand the DR-Z70 upright on level ground, using the bike’s stand or a maintenance lift.
  • Remove the seat and side panels as needed for easy access to the radiator cap and coolant hoses.

Step 2: Drain the Old Coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the water pump and lower radiator hose connection on the right side of the engine.

  • Clean the drain bolt and its sealing surface. Reinstall and torque to manufacturer specifications.

Step 5: Fill with New Coolant

  • Slowly pour pre-mixed coolant into the radiator fill neck. Fill until coolant just begins to reach the top. On the DR-Z70, avoid overfilling, which can cause overflow when the engine heats up.
  • If your DR-Z70 is equipped with a coolant overflow reservoir, fill the bottle to the designated "FULL" line.

Step 6: Bleed the Cooling System

  • Some DR-Z models feature an air bleed screw on the water neck or left radiator; check your engine for this feature. Open the bleed screw a few turns as you add coolant to let trapped air escape. Once coolant flows steadily from the bleed port, snug the screw down.
  • If your DR-Z70 does not have a bleed screw, gently lean the bike side to side after filling to help trapped air reach the radiator fill neck.
  • Top off the coolant as the level drops during air release.

Step 7: Final Checks & Top Off

  • Reinstall the radiator cap securely.

  • Shut down. Once fully cooled, open the radiator cap and check coolant level. Top off if needed.
