The KX100, known for its high-revving two-stroke power and light chassis, puts considerable demands on its cooling system—making proper maintenance especially important.
Tools & Supplies Needed
- Fresh, compatible motorcycle coolant (avoid car coolant due to silicate content)
- 10mm socket or wrench
- Philips screwdriver (for bleeder cap, if equipped)
- Catching pan for old coolant
- Funnel for refilling
- Clean rags for wipe-up
- Optional: Compressed air (for thorough flushes)
Step-by-Step Coolant Change Instructions

Let your KX100 cool completely.
Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot–the system is pressurized and hot coolant can cause burns. -
Remove the radiator cap.
Locate it on top of the left radiator. Turn slowly to release any residual pressure. - Place a drain pan under the water pump side of the engine.

Remove the coolant drain bolt.
On the 2015 KX100, the drain bolt is typically found at the bottom of the water pump cover (right side of engine). Use a 10mm wrench to undo the bolt and let all coolant drain out.
*Tip: Tilt the bike slightly (with care) to ensure full drainage. If changing coolant types, periodically flush the system with distilled water or use compressed air for a more thorough purge. -
If equipped, remove the air bleeder screw on the radiator.
This extra step reduces vacuum lock and ensures a more complete drain. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove it. -
Reinstall the drain bolt and bleeder screw (if used).
Ensure the sealing washer or O-ring is in good condition. Do not overtighten; just snug. -
Slowly fill the radiator with new coolant.
Add coolant until near the top. Pause and gently rock the bike side to side to help remove trapped air. Continue filling as needed. - Reinstall the radiator cap.

Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
This circulates coolant and purges air bubbles. Watch the coolant level through the cap opening (top off as needed after air escapes). -
Check for leaks.
Visually inspect the drain bolt, radiator, and hose connections. -
Ride – then recheck coolant level.
After the first ride, let the bike cool and recheck the coolant. Top off to the lower radiator neck if necessary.
KX100 Owner Notes
- The KX100's lightweight radiators are vulnerable; always check for bent fins or leaks after dropping your bike.
- This bike lacks a coolant reservoir bottle. Monitor your levels frequently–especially after hard riding or learning to wheelie.
- Use only non-silicate, motorcycle-safe coolant to prevent premature wear of seals and water pump parts.
- Replace coolant every 40–50 hours of riding, or sooner if riding in extreme conditions.
