How to Change the Coolant in a 2014 KTM 300XC

Tools – Supplies Needed

  • Drain pan

  • Shop towels or rags
  • Torque wrench (optional but ideal)

Step 1 – Preparation

  • Ensure the bike is completely cool before starting to avoid injury from hot coolant or components.
  • Position the motorcycle upright and securely on a stand. If possible, elevate the front wheel slightly to help remove any trapped air during refilling.–See note under Bleeding below
  • Remove the radiator cap to allow air in and help coolant drain freely.

Step 2 – Draining the Old Coolant

  • Locate the drain bolt on the water pump cover—on KTM 300XC, it's the bolt with a copper washer.–A model-specific touch: KTM uses this as a drain indicator.
  • Place a drain pan underneath and loosen the drain bolt carefully. Allow all old coolant to drain out.
  • If flushing, replace the drain bolt, fill the radiator with distilled water, and repeat the drain process until only clear water flows out.

Step 3 – Refilling with New Coolant

  • After draining completely, re-install the drain bolt and tighten securely (refer to your owner's manual for torque spec).
  • Slowly pour fresh coolant into the radiator up to the recommended capacity: 1.2 liters (1.3 quarts) for the 2014 KTM 300XC.–Model-specific spec

Step 4 – Bleeding Air from the System

  • KTM 300XC cooling systems can trap air, reducing cooling performance. To bleed:
    • With the bike upright (front slightly elevated helps), fill coolant until full.
    • Some models include a bleeder screw on the cylinder head—open slightly until liquid escapes without bubbles, then close.
    • If no bleeder screw, gently rock the bike and squeeze the radiator hoses to help trapped air escape.
    • Refill as needed until coolant remains at the top of the radiator.

Step 5 – Final Checks

  • Reinstall the radiator cap securely.
