Preparation Steps

Draining the Old Coolant
- Locate the radiator cap (usually right of center at the top of the radiators). Remove it slowly to relieve any residual pressure.
- Position a bucket under the water pump area – look for the single 8 mm drain bolt at the base of the water pump cover.
- Loosen and remove the drain bolt. Allow coolant to flow out completely. To speed up draining, also loosen the bleed screw (if your 200XCW has one) on top of the radiator to allow more air in the system and fluid out.
Flushing (Recommended)
- If changing coolant types or if debris is present, flush the system. Put the drain bolt back slightly, fill radiators with distilled water, reinstall cap, run engine briefly, then repeat drain & fill until water runs clear. Remove all water before adding coolant to avoid dilution.
Refilling with New Coolant
- Replace the drain bolt – torque to approximately 10 Nm (nipped tight if not using a torque wrench).
- Fill the radiator slowly with new coolant, using a funnel for control. Top off until the coolant reaches just under the neck of the radiator.
- Loosen the radiator bleed screw or tilt the bike to help purge trapped air. When coolant begins to escape from the bleed hole, tighten the screw again.
Bleeding and Checking
- Keep the radiator cap off. Start the bike and let it idle for a few minutes. Squeeze the radiator hoses gently to help any remaining air escape. Shut off the engine and top off coolant if needed.
- Clean up any spillage and wipe down the bike. Install the radiator cap securely.
- Reinstall any removed plastic or the seat.
- Start and warm up the bike. Check for leaks at all fasteners and joints. Recheck coolant level after the engine has cooled completely. Top off as needed.
Specific Notes for the 2014 KTM 200XCW
- This model uses a two-radiator setup. Ensure both radiators are filled and bled properly. The system will only take about 0.8L, so over-filling can cause overflow issues.
- Always use the coolant type recommended by KTM to ensure proper corrosion protection for the aluminum system and optimal temperature control.
