How to Change the Coolant in a 2013 KTM 350XCFW: MotoSport Guide

Proper coolant maintenance is crucial for the performance – and longevity – of your 2013 KTM 350XCFW. KTM's high-revving engines run hot, so keeping the cooling system in top shape prevents overheating on the trail and maintains optimal riding performance. Here’s how to change the coolant and important details unique to your bike.

What You Need

  • OEM-recommended coolant or equivalent premix
  • 8mm socket or wrench
  • Torque wrench (recommended)
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Protective gloves and eyewear

Drain the Old Coolant

  1. Make sure the engine is completely cool to avoid burns.
  2. Stand the bike upright on a flat surface – a stand is ideal.
  3. Remove the radiator cap slowly to release any pressure.
  4. Position the drain pan under the engine’s water pump area.
  5. Locate and loosen the 8mm drain bolt on the water pump cover (right side of engine). Remove the bolt and let coolant fully drain.
    Tip: Loosening the radiator cap improves flow – always replace the sealing ring on the drain bolt during reassembly for leak-free performance.

Flush (If Desired)

If your coolant was badly contaminated, pour clean distilled water through the radiator until it drains clear. This step is optional but helpful for thorough maintenance.

Refill with Coolant

  1. Reinstall the drain bolt (torque to 10 Nm / 7.4 lbf ft). Double check for a clean sealing surface and good O-ring.
  2. Slowly pour coolant into the radiator neck, filling to the top of the core.
    Unique Note: The 2013 KTM 350XCFW does not use a coolant overflow bottle, so do not overfill. Fill just to the bottom of the filler neck when the bike is vertical for best results.
  3. Tilt the bike slightly left/right to help air escape. Squeeze the radiator hoses gently to burp out trapped air.
  4. Securely reinstall the radiator cap.

Check for Leaks and Bleed the System

  • Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes. Watch the temperature and feel the hoses – they should get warm as coolant circulates.
  • Shut off the bike and let it cool. Check the level and top off if needed.
    Note: KTM recommends elevating the front wheel slightly if stubborn air pockets prevent proper bleeding. On the 350XCFW, this can make a difference in rare cases. Always work on a cool engine for safety.

Additional Tips Specific to the 2013 KTM 350XCFW

  • The 350XCFW’s engine tolerances are tight, and overheating can quickly cause performance loss. Periodic coolant changes – at least annually, or after muddy rides – are highly recommended.
  • If you notice coolant discoloration or oil contamination, inspect water pump seals during your service.
  • The 2013 350XCFW uses a mix-ready coolant formulated for off-road high-performance bikes. Avoid mixing with tap water or using automotive anti-freeze, as this can corrode seals and aluminum components.

Disposal

Be sure to dispose of your old coolant responsibly at a local recycling center. Never pour it down a drain or on the ground.
