Proper coolant maintenance is crucial to keeping your 2013 Beta 520 RS performing at its best. Fresh coolant not only protects the engine from overheating but also prevents corrosion within the water pump and radiators. The following guide covers each step, along with unique considerations for 2013 520 RS owners.
Before You Begin: What You Need
- Pre-mixed motorcycle coolant (do not use plain tap waterdistilled only if you must mix)
- Socket/ratchet set and screwdriver
- Drain pan
- Funne
- Clean rags
- Gloves
1. Prep the Bike & Work Area
- Ensure the bike is cold and placed securely on a stand.
- Remove your seat and right side panel to access the radiator cap and drain boltthis is straightforward on the 2013 Beta 520 RS.
2. Drain the Old Coolant
- Locate the coolant drain bolt, typically near the water pump cover on the right engine case.
- Place the drain pan beneath the bolt & remove the radiator cap to release any pressure.
- Unscrew the drain bolt and let the coolant flow out completely. Gently rock the bike side to side to help evacuate trapped fluid from the radiators and hoses.
3. Flush (Recommended for Thoroughness)
- If performing a flush, reinstall the drain bolt and fill with distilled water before repeating the draining step. This helps remove old deposits and remaining coolant.
4. Reinstall Drain Bolt
- Replace the drain bolt and ensure it's snug, but do not overtighten—the threads are aluminum and can strip if over-torqued.
5. Refill with Coolant
- Using a funnel, fill the left radiator until coolant is just above the core fins. The 2013 Beta 520 RS takes approximately 1.2 liters, but always verify by sight.
- Allow a few seconds for coolant to settle and refill as needed to ensure both radiators are full. Gently rock the bike or squeeze hoses to help release trapped air.
6. Burp the System
- Leave the radiator cap off and briefly start the bike for 15-30 seconds while watching the coolant level. This action will help expel any air bubbles.
- Top off again as the level drops, then replace the radiator cap securely.
7. Final Steps
- Reinstall bodywork and seat.
- Start the engine and run until it reaches operating temperature. Check for leaks.
- Allow the bike to cool fully, then recheck coolant in the radiators to ensure the correct fill–it should be just above the core fins.
Important Notes for 2013 Beta 520 RS Owners
- The 2013 Beta 520 RS features separate left and right radiators. Both must be properly filled—rocking the bike assists in balancing the level between radiators as there is no bleeder screw on this model compared to some older Betas.
- OEM coolant is recommended for optimal corrosion protection. Replace every 12-24 months or sooner for extreme riding conditions.
- After the first heat cycle and cool-down, always double-check for proper coolant level as the last air pockets may escape during initial operation.
Disposal & Environmental Awareness
- Do not pour used coolant down the drain or into the environment. Collect and bring to an approved recycling or hazardous waste facility.
Regular coolant changes help maintain peak performance and longevity for your Beta 520 RS—ride on knowing your bike is protected from the inside out.
