Step-by-Step Coolant Change Procedure

  3. Locate Radiator Cap & Drain Bolt: The radiator cap is on top of the left down tube. The drain bolt is at the bottom of the water pump cover (right side of engine).
  4. Drain Old Coolant: Position your drain pan under the water pump. Slowly remove the radiator cap to release any residual system pressure. Loosen then remove the coolant drain bolt – coolant will begin to flow out. Remove the reservoir drain hose to fully empty the system.

  7. Refill with Fresh Coolant: Reinstall the drain bolt and tighten to spec. Fill the radiator with your selected coolant until full. Don’t forget to fill the overflow reservoir to the correct level as well.
  8. Bleed Air from System: With the radiator cap off, briefly start the engine and let it idle. Watch for air bubbles to escape. When bubbling stops and the level stabilizes, top off the radiator to the brim and reinstall the cap.
  9. Final Check: Ride the XR650L until it reaches full operating temperature. Let the engine fully cool, then recheck and top off coolant levels in both radiator and reservoir, if needed.
  10. Inspect for Leaks: Check carefully around the drain bolt, hose connections, and base of the radiator. Tighten as necessary.
