Important Notes Before You Start
- Always allow the engine to cool completely before servicing the cooling system to prevent burns from hot coolant or steam—the cooling system in the RM85 operates under pressure when hot.
- Never use tap water for flushing–use distilled or deionized water to prevent mineral buildup.
- 2011 RM85 coolant capacity is approximately 950 ml.
Supplies You Will Need
- Fresh engine coolant formulated for aluminum engines (avoid pre-2000s green coolant not rated for motorcycles)
- Distilled water (if flushing)
- Socket or wrench set (8mm for drain bolt)
- Drain pan
- New drain bolt gasket (recommended)

Step 1: Preparing the Bike
- Ensure the bike is parked upright on a level surface.

Step 2: Draining the Old Coolant
- Place a drain pan underneath the water pump–the drain bolt is typically located at the lowest point of the pump cover on the right side of the engine.
- Remove the radiator cap to allow air in and improve draining.
- Loosen (or fully remove) the coolant drain bolt and let the old coolant flow out completely. Move the bike gently side to side to help drain any trapped coolant.
- If doing a flush, pour distilled water into the radiator and briefly reinstall the drain bolt. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute, then repeat the drain process. Continue until only clear water drains out.
- Replace the drain bolt, ideally with a new gasket, and tighten to manufacturer spec (typically 8.0 lbf-ft or 11 N·m for Suzuki dirt bikes).
Step 3: Filling with New Coolant
- Slowly pour coolant into the radiator filler neck until it reaches the bottom of the neck. Allow air bubbles to escape as you fill.
- If your RM85 has an air bleeder bolt, loosen it while filling to ensure no air remains trapped in the system. Tighten the bleeder after coolant flows steadily from it.
- Install the radiator cap securely.
Step 4: Bleeding Air and Checking Levels
- Start the engine and idle for a few minutes, gently revving a few times to circulate the coolant and help release air bubbles.
- Shut the engine off and allow it to cool. Re-check coolant level and top off if necessary.
- Final coolant level should be at the base of the filler neck with the radiator cap removed and the bike cool.
Step 5: Clean Up & Disposal
- Dispose of used coolant properly–never pour it down drains or on the ground as it is toxic to wildlife.
- Wipe up any spills and reinstall any panels or parts removed.
- Inspect hoses and radiator for leaks or cracks–replace parts as needed.
Special RM85 Considerations
- The 2011 RM85 is known for having a high-revving engine that produces significant heat during aggressive riding. Monitor coolant level regularly, especially between motos or rides.
- Inspect the radiator for any fin damage or bends, as this model relies heavily on efficient airflow and cooling for best performance.
- If the bike has sat unused, always check the condition of the radiator cap and hoses—these rubber parts can become brittle on older two-strokes.
