Step-by-Step Coolant Change Guide
- Let the bike cool completely.
Never remove the radiator cap when the bike is warm–the KLX140L system is pressurized and hot coolant can spray out. - Remove bodywork for access.
Take off the right side cover and, if needed, the seat by loosening the mounting bolts–this is standard for any work near the fuel tank or the coolant reservoir on the KLX140R L . Pull the right side of the fuel tank cover up temporarily for easier access. - Locate and remove the radiator cap.
The KLX140L radiator cap is typically on the left side, mounted at the top. Twist counterclockwise and set it aside. - Drain the old coolant.
Place a drain pan under the water pump (found low on the right side of the engine). Find the coolant drain bolt, usually at the lowest point on the water pump cover. Use your 8 mm or 10 mm socket to loosen the bolt and allow coolant to completely drain.
*Tip: Opening the radiator cap before the drain bolt speeds up draining by allowing air in above.* - Flush if needed.
If the drained coolant looks rusty or contaminated, pour filtered water into the radiator, reinstall the drain bolt, and run the engine briefly. Shut off, let cool, remove the bolt, and drain again. Repeat until water drains clear. This step is critical for bikes ridden in dirt and mud where debris may contaminate the cooling system. - Reinstall the drain bolt.
Tighten securely. Wipe up any spills. - Refill with fresh coolant.
Use a funnel to minimize spills. Fill the radiator with your chosen coolant up to the bottom of the fill neck. Squeeze the main coolant hose gently to burp out trapped air bubbles. - Refill the overflow reservoir.
The KLX140L has a small overflow tank–check the high and low marks, and fill to the correct range. - Reinstall the radiator cap and body panels.
Double-check that both the radiator cap and drain bolt are tight. Reattach the seat, tank cover, and side panels, ensuring all fasteners are secure . - Check for leaks and top off as needed.
Start the engine and let it warm up with the bike upright. After cooling, recheck the coolant level at the radiator and overflow tank. Add coolant if necessary until levels are within spec.
Important Notes for KLX140R L Owners
- Use only non-silicate coolant designed for motorcycles. Regular automotive coolants can damage the water pump seals and aluminum components.
- Inspect radiator fins and hoses for debris or damage during maintenance.
- The KLX140L cooling system is relatively small, so even a minor drop in coolant or small leak can quickly lead to overheating. Check levels before every ride, especially after extreme off-road use.
- Coolant should be replaced at least every two years, but more frequently is recommended for bikes ridden in muddy or abrasive conditions.
