How to Change the Coolant in a 2010 KTM 250XC

If you ride a 2010 KTM 250XC, timely coolant changes are critical for optimal performance and engine life. The KTM two-stroke cooling systems are robust but sensitive to air pockets and require care when servicing. Follow these instructions unique to your bike for a smooth, trouble-free coolant swap.
Preparation – What You Need
- Fresh high-quality coolant approved for aluminum engines
- Drain pan
- 8mm socket or wrench
- Funnel (optional, but helps reduce spills)
- Towels or shop rags for cleanup
- Torque wrench (recommended but not required)
Step 1: Cool the Engine
Ensure the bike is completely cool before you begin. Opening a hot cooling system can cause burns and spray coolant under pressure.
Step 2: Radiator Cap Off
Remove the radiator cap slowly, letting off any residual pressure. This step allows easier and more complete draining of the system.
Step 3: Locate and Remove the Drain Bolt
On your 2010 KTM 250XC, the coolant drain bolt is typically located on the water pump cover (generally on the right side of the engine). Place your drain pan underneath, then use an 8mm socket or wrench to remove the bolt and allow coolant to flow out fully. Upright the bike to ensure all old coolant drains out.
Step 4: Inspect and Reinstall Drain Bolt
Once drained, inspect the sealing washer and drain bolt for wear. Reinstall the drain bolt. If using a torque wrench, tighten to 10 Nm for KTM drain bolts. Never over-tighten, as the water pump cover is soft aluminum.
Step 5: Fill with Fresh Coolant
Using a funnel, slowly pour the new coolant into the radiator until it reaches just below the filler neck. Never mix different coolant types or add straight water. Use a coolant formulated for modern aluminum engines to prevent corrosion, especially important in KTMs.
Step 6: Bleed the System
The 250XC is prone to air pockets after service. Tilt the bike from side to side and gently squeeze the radiator hoses to help release trapped air. Start the engine briefly with the radiator cap off – watch for air bubbles escaping, then shut down the bike and top off as needed. Refit the radiator cap.
Step 7: Final Inspection
- Check all fittings, hose clamps, and the drain bolt for leaks as the engine warms up.
- After a few minutes of running, let the engine cool and verify coolant level, topping off if necessary.
Special 2010 KTM 250XC Notes
- Your 250XC uses a pressurized radiator system for higher cooling efficiency; always use the correct pressure-cap rating specified by KTM.
- The 250XC shares its frame and cooling layout with other KTM XCs but always refer to the XC (not XC-F or EXC) specifications for service intervals and coolant capacity.
- If you race or ride in muddy or slow conditions, inspect the radiator screens and fins for clogging – blocked airflow will cause overheating even if coolant volume is correct.
- Do not substitute automotive coolants with silicate content — use motorcycle/ATV-specific blends for long water pump seal and gasket life.
