Changing the coolant in your 2009 Yamaha WR250F is a critical maintenance task to keep your dirt bike running cool and delivering consistent performance. The WR250F's high-revving, liquid-cooled engine depends on quality coolant and a properly flushed system to prevent overheating – especially when pushing it on trails or tracks.

Step 1: Cool the Engine & Prep the Bike
Allow your WR250F to completely cool before you begin. A hot engine or coolant system is dangerous to service due to scalding risk. Set the bike on a stable stand and remove any bodywork panels that may obstruct access to the radiator cap and drain bolt.
Step 2: Remove Radiator Cap
Twist off the radiator cap slowly to relieve any residual pressure. Place the cap in a safe, clean place.
Step 3: Drain Old Coolant
Locate the coolant drain bolt, typically found at the lowest point of the water pump cover on the right side of the engine. Use your 8mm socket to carefully remove this bolt. Position your drain pan underneath to catch the flow. If equipped, also remove the coolant reservoir cover and drain any coolant from the overflow tank.
Step 4: Flush the System
Replace the drain bolt temporarily. Fill the radiator with distilled water using your funnel, then reinstall the cap and briefly start the engine. Let it idle for a minute or two to circulate the flush water. DO NOT allow the engine to get hot.
Shut off the engine, let it cool, then drain the flush water, repeating this process until the water runs clear. This step removes mineral deposits and any old coolant residue that can compromise performance.
Step 5: Refill with Fresh Coolant
Thread and torque the drain bolt securely. Add high-quality, pre-mixed motorcycle coolant up to the radiator fill neck, allowing bubbles to escape. On the WR250F, gently rocking the bike from side to side can help burp trapped air from the system.
Top off the overflow reservoir to the appropriate level as marked.
Step 6: Bleed and Check the System
With the radiator cap off, run the engine briefly to purge any remaining air. Watch the coolant level – top off if it drops. When bubbling subsides, shut off the engine, allow it to cool, then reinstall the radiator cap.
Check for leaks around the drain bolt, hose clamps, and radiator seams. Ensure proper coolant level in both radiator and overflow tank after the first ride.
