Changing the coolant in your 2009 Suzuki DRZ400S is a straightforward process, but knowing a few DRZ-specific tips ensures your dirt bike stays running cool and reliable on every ride. The DRZ400S uses a liquid-cooled system, which requires periodic maintenance to prevent overheating and component wear. What You–ll Need

  • Socket set (including 10mm and 12mm sockets)
  • Medium-size Phillips screwdriver
  • Container for old coolant
  • Fresh pre-mixed 50/50 motorcycle coolant (compatible with aluminum engines and radiators)
  • Protective gloves
  • Rags for cleanup

Step 1: Remove the Side Cover

Start with the bike cool to the touch. Use your 12mm socket to remove the side cover. This exposes the water pump and drain bolt, simplifying access for draining the system.

Step 2: Open the Radiator Cap

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the small screw securing the radiator cap, then carefully take off the cap. This breaks any vacuum, allowing the coolant to flow out smoothly.

Step 3: Drain the Old Coolant

Locate the drain bolt on the water pump cover (10mm). Place your container underneath and remove the bolt, allowing the coolant to fully drain. Make sure to dispose of coolant properly since it's toxic to pets, wildlife & the environment.

Step 4: Release Air from the Cooling System

Find the air bleed screw at the top front of the cylinder head. Some 2009 DRZ400S bikes have it, while others don–t, depending on head style. Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Bolt

With the old coolant completely out, reinstall and snug down the water pump drain bolt.

Step 7: Bleed Remaining Air

Step 8: Replace the Radiator Cap

Replace the radiator cap and the small retaining screw if desired.

Step 9: Warm the Bike, Recheck Coolant

Start your DRZ400S and let it idle until it reaches operating temperature. Keep an eye on the temperature and check for leaks. Shut off the engine and allow to cool. Open the radiator cap once more and top off the coolant if needed, and fill the overflow bottle to the marked level.
