Tools & Supplies Needed
- Fresh motorcycle-specific coolant (50/50 mix of ethylene glycol antifreeze & distilled water)
- Socket set (10mm and 8mm recommended)
- Phillips screwdriver
- Container for old coolant
- Funnel
- New drain plug gasket (recommended)
- Clean rags
- Gloves & eye protection
Step-by-Step Guide
- Cool Engine & Secure the Bike
Make sure the engine is cool to the touch. Place your KLX450R on a level surface, using a stand for stability. - Remove the Left Side Panel
Use an 8mm socket and/or Phillips screwdriver to remove the fasteners from the left side cover. This exposes the radiator cap and reserve tank. - Open the Radiator Cap
Slowly unscrew and remove the radiator cap to relieve any system pressure. Turn the cap counterclockwise with a rag to prevent spills. - Drain the Old Coolant
Locate the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover (bottom right engine side). Place your drain pan under the plug, then remove the plug with a 10mm socket. Allow coolant to drain fully. You may also remove the reserve tank bolt and take the tank off the frame to pour out any old coolant in the reservoir.
Tip: Always use a new drain plug gasket for proper sealing on reassembly. - Flush (Optional for Thoroughness)
For a complete flush, pour distilled water through the radiator cap opening, reinstall the drain bolt temporarily, and circulate briefly (if desired). Drain again to remove any remaining contaminants. - Reinstall Drain Bolt & Gasket
Once drained, install a new drain plug gasket and torque the drain bolt to specificationover-tightening can strip the cover. - Refill Coolant
Using a funnel, fill the radiator through the cap opening with your 50/50 coolant mix until just below the filler neck. Fill the clean reserve tank up to the "F" (FULL) line as well. Avoid overfilling to allow for expansion.
Use a 1:1 mix of ethylene glycol antifreeze and distilled water, as recommended by Kawasaki. - Bleed the System
Rock the bike side to side and gently squeeze coolant hoses to help purge any trapped air. Some models have a bleeder screwopen briefly (if equipped) until coolant flows steadily, then retighten. - Reinstall the Radiator Cap & Side Panel
Install the radiator cap firmly, ensuring it is secure and properly seated. Reattach the left side cover with its bolts and screws. - Start and Warm Up the Engine
Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Watch the coolant level in the reserve tank and radiatorthe level may drop as air is expelled. Allow the engine to cool, then recheck and top off as needed. - Dispose of Old Coolant Properly
Bring your old coolant to a recycling center or auto parts storenever pour coolant down drains or onto the ground.
