Tools and Supplies Needed

- 8 mm socket or wrench
- Drain pan or container
- Funnel
- Torque wrench (recommended)
- Clean rags
- Distilled water (if you plan to flush)
- Protective gloves and eyewear
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Engine Cool Down
Ensure the bike is completely cool before beginning. Never open the cooling system when the engine is hot, as pressurized fluid can cause burns and injury. - Access the Radiator and Water Pump
Place the bike upright on a stand. Remove any shrouds or plastics if necessary to access the radiator cap and the drain bolt. - Remove the Radiator Cap
Slowly twist the radiator cap off to release any residual pressure in the system. - Position the Drain Pan
Place a drain pan directly under the lower water pump. - Drain the Coolant
Locate the 8 mm drain bolt on the water pump cover (often the one with a copper washer). Carefully remove the bolt and allow all coolant to drain completely into the pan.
Tip: You may gently tip the bike from side to side to help evacuate trapped coolant.
Replace the drain bolt and copper washer after draining. Tighten by hand, then torque to factory spec if available.
- Optional: Flush the Cooling System
For a thorough maintenance, pour distilled water into the radiator, reinstall the drain bolt, and gently run the engine for a short period. Shut off, allow to cool, remove the drain bolt, and flush. Repeat until clean water exits. - Refill With New Coolant
Using a funnel, fill the radiator slowly with fresh coolant until near the top. Check the coolant level in the radiator and the overflow/expansion (compensating) tankfill to the MAX line if equipped.
Note: The 2008 KTM 250XCF uses around 1.0-1.1 liters of coolantdo not overfill. - Bleed Air from the System
Some KTM models include a bleeder screw on the radiator or water pump cover. If present, open slightly until coolant free of air bubbles flows, then tighten.
