What You'll Need
- Pre-mixed 50/50 motorcycle coolant (suitable for aluminum components; avoid automotive coolant with silicates)
- 12mm socket or wrench

- Distilled water (for optional flush)
- Shop towels or rags
Step 1: Preparation and Access
- Let the bike cool completely before starting the procedure to prevent burns.
- Set the motorcycle upright on a stand. Remove the left side plastic fairing using a Phillips screwdriver and 12mm socket–this grants access to the water pump and drain bolt.
Step 2: Drain the Old Coolant
- Locate the radiator cap on the right radiator. Remove the small screw securing it if present, then twist off the radiator cap to release system pressure.
- Position a drain pan under the water pump (bottom of the right engine cover). Use a 10mm socket to remove the drain bolt from the water pump cover. Let the coolant drain fully into the pan.
Dispose of old coolant safely–it is harmful to pets and the environment.
Step 3: Optional Flushing
- If the old coolant appears dirty or contaminated, re-install the drain bolt (torque to spec), fill the radiator with distilled water, and repeat the drain process until the water runs clear.
Step 4: Bleeding the Cooling System (DRZ400SM-Specific Tip)
- With this model, check for an air bleed screw at the water neck (top front of cylinder head) and on the top of the left radiator. If equipped, use an 8mm wrench to crack these open slightly. (Some DRZ400SMs do not have the water neck bleeder–if your water neck points straight up, skip this screw.)
Step 5: Fill with New Coolant
- Slowly fill the right radiator with pre-mixed coolant. Air will escape from bleed screws. When coolant comes out at the bleeder, snug it down. Repeat for the left radiator bleed screw.
- Continue filling until the radiator is full. Gently rock the bike side to side to encourage any trapped air to rise–top off as needed.
Step 6: Reassemble and Check
- Replace the radiator cap securely and re-attach the side fairing.
- Start the motorcycle and let it idle for a few minutes. Monitor for overheating and leaks.
- Let the engine cool, open the radiator cap, and top off the coolant. To finish, fill the overflow tank (found under the side cover) to the "Full" mark–on the DRZ400SM, a 1 inch fill is sufficient.
Model-Specific Notes for the 2007 DRZ400SM
- This supermoto model, like other DRZ400 variants, does not have a thermostat. Warm-up is quicker, but coolant will circulate as soon as the engine is running; thus, be vigilant for air pockets.
