How to Change the Coolant in a 2007 Suzuki DRZ400E

What You Will Need
- Metric socket set (10mm, 12mm, 8mm)
- Medium Phillips screwdriver
- Pre-mixed 50/50 motorcycle coolant (recommended – avoid using straight coolant without distilled water)
- Drain pan
- Rags or towels for cleanup
- Protective gloves
Step-by-Step Guide
- Remove Side Fairings
Start with the bike completely cool. For best access to the radiator and drain bolt, remove the side fairing(s) using a 12mm socket and/or Phillips screwdriver.
- Remove Radiator Cap
Locate the radiator cap – it is typically secured with a small screw. Remove the screw and then unscrew the cap. Doing this first allows the system to drain smoothly by letting air in as coolant comes out.
- Locate and Remove the Coolant Drain Bolt
The drain bolt is found on the water pump cover at the lower right side of the engine, just below the coolant hose. Use your 10mm socket to unscrew this bolt and let old coolant drain into your pan. Open the bleed screw(s) on the radiator or water neck as needed to help the system drain fully; on some 2007 DRZ400E units, you may find a slotted air bleed screw on the top of the head and another on the left radiator. Back them out a couple turns – do not remove completely.
- Inspect & Clean
Inspect the drained coolant for debris or oil contamination. Wipe any spilled coolant from the engine and surrounding area. Check the O-ring or washer on the drain bolt for wear or damage – replace if necessary before reinstalling.
- Refit the Drain Bolt
Finger-tighten the drain bolt, then torque it lightly with your wrench to avoid stripping the threads.
- Refill the System with Coolant
Slowly pour the new coolant into the right-side radiator. With the air bleed screws still open, continue filling until coolant begins seeping from each bleed point, indicating trapped air is escaping. Once coolant emerges freely, snug down the bleed screws.
- Burp the Cooling System
Gently rock the bike left & right to help any remaining air pockets work their way out. Fill coolant as needed so the radiator neck stays topped off. Replace the radiator cap securely.
- Start & Warm Up the Bike
Start the engine and let it idle until fully warm. Watch the coolant level as you rev gently — the coolant may drop as air escapes. If so, shut off the engine and allow it to cool, then re-open the cap and top off as necessary.
- Top Off the Overflow Reservoir
The 2007 DRZ400E features a small overflow bottle. Before replacing the fairings, check that the coolant level in the reservoir sits between the "Full" and "Low" marks (about 1 inch of coolant is typical).
- Reinstall Fairings
Reattach all plastic covers and screws removed earlier. Ensure the radiator cap screw is tight if fitted.
DRZ400E Model-Specific Tips
- The DRZ400E may not have a thermostat or the same air bleed configuration as the SM or S versions. Always check your water neck orientation – some have no bleed screw if the neck points straight up.
- Use only aluminum-friendly coolant (silicate-free) to prevent internal corrosion.
- The cooling capacity is about 1.3 liters for both radiators plus reservoir.
- Riding in harsh terrain makes frequent coolant checks essential – overheating is still possible if mud or debris blocks the radiators.
