  • Fresh sealing washer (for drain bolt, optional)

Step-by-Step Coolant Change Process

  1. Prep Your Bike:
    • Let the engine cool completely. Place the bike on a stable stand.
    • Remove the side panel for easy access to the radiator fill cap.
  2. Remove the Radiator Cap:
    • Take out the small screw securing the cap.
    • Slowly twist off the radiator cap to relieve any residual pressure. Always do this when the engine is cool to avoid burns.
  3. Drain Old Coolant:
    • Place a drain pan beneath the water pump cover (near the right side footpeg).
    • Use a 10mm socket to remove the coolant drain bolt. Let coolant flow out completely.
      Tip: Slightly rock the bike left and right to encourage more fluid to drain.
  4. Flush the System (Recommended):
    • If the coolant is very dirty, temporarily reinstall the drain bolt, fill the radiator with distilled water, then repeat the draining procedure until water runs clear.
  5. Reinstall the Drain Bolt:
    • Inspect the drain bolt sealing washer and replace if worn. Reinstall the bolt and snug it up gently – do not overtighten.
  6. Fill With New Coolant:
    • If your bike has them, open the small air bleed screw on top of the left radiator and, if present, the water neck at the front of the cylinder head. Most DR-Z400SMs feature the radiator bleeder screw but not the water neck bleeder.
    • Slowly pour pre-mixed coolant into the right radiator. Watch the bleeder screws – once coolant starts flowing out, snug them closed.
    • Continue filling until the radiator is topped off.
  7. Eliminate Air Pockets:
    • Reinstall the radiator cap and start the engine. Run at idle for a few minutes, watching the coolant level drop as air works itself out.
    • Shut off the engine and carefully top off the radiator to the brim. Squeeze the radiator hoses to help purge trapped air, then reinstall the radiator cap securely.
  8. Top Off Reservoir and Recheck:
    • Check the coolant reservoir level (usually located near the left rear of the bike). Fill to the appropriate "full" mark.
    • Inspect all bolts, fittings, and hoses for leaks. Reinstall side panels.
