Step-by-Step Coolant Change Guide

  1. Make Sure Engine Is Cool
    Always perform this maintenance only after the engine is completely cool. Opening a hot cooling system can result in dangerous burns from pressurized steam.
  2. Remove the Radiator Cap
    Locate the radiator cap on the right radiator. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the small retaining screw if equipped. Then, slowly twist off the radiator cap to relieve any remaining pressure.
  3. Locate and Remove the Coolant Drain Bolt
    Move to the water pump cover on the lower right side of the engine. Below the water pump, you will find the coolant drain bolt (usually a 10mm hex head). Place the drain pan beneath and remove the bolt carefully to allow coolant to flow out.
    Note: If your model has a coolant overflow bottle, disconnect the overflow hose and drain it as well.

    To remove built-up debris or old coolant residues, you can pour a small amount of distilled water into the radiator, briefly reinstall the cap, rock the bike gently, and drain it again. Never use pressurized water. Repeat as needed until the drained water runs clear.
  5. Reinstall the Drain Bolt
    Once the old coolant is drained (and system flushed if desired), securely reinstall the drain bolt.
  6. Refill with New Coolant
    Using a funnel, slowly pour fresh coolant into the radiator up to the neck. If your DR-Z125 has an overflow bottle, fill it to the appropriate line as well.
  7. Bleed Air from the System
    The DR-Z125 cooling system should be properly bled to remove air pockets:
    • Gently rock the bike left and right to help trapped air escape.
    • If equipped, open any air bleed screws near the water neck or radiator until coolant seeps out, then snug them closed. Not all DR-Z125s have these if not present, skip this step.
  8. Reinstall the Radiator Cap
    Once air is bled and coolant level is topped off, reinstall the cap securely. Replace the retaining screw if your cap uses one.
  9. Warm Up and Check Level
    Start the engine and let it idle until it reaches normal operating temperature. Monitor the temperature gauge or feel the radiator (with caution). Shut off and allow the bike to cool.
  10. Top Off If Needed
    After the bike has cooled, recheck the radiator level. Add additional coolant if needed. Also check your overflow bottle and adjust the level to the full line.

  • The 2005 DR-Z125 uses an air-cooled engine, but the DR-Z125L and certain models were equipped with liquid cooling and radiators, especially in some regions or for competition packages. Double-check your bike's exact configuration before beginning–if your DR-Z125 is air-cooled, it does not use coolant, just oil.
  • Only use motorcycle-specific, pre-mixed coolant–automotive coolants can harm engine internals and seals found on dirt bikes.
