Step-by-Step Coolant Change Guide
- Allow the engine to cool completely. Never open the radiator cap if the engine is hot. This protects you from dangerous steam burns.
- Remove the radiator cap. Access is best from the right side of the KDX220; twist off the radiator cap to relieve any residual pressure.
- Locate the drain bolt. Look for a small bolt at the water pump cover (bottom right side of the engine case). Use your 8mm or 10mm socket to remove it. Position your drain pan beneath the water pump.
- Drain the old coolant. Let the old coolant flow into your pan. To speed draining and flushing, gently rock the bike side to side. Dispose of used coolant responsibly according to local regulations.
- Flush the system (optional but recommended). Replace the drain bolt temporarily. Fill the radiator with distilled water. Reinstall the radiator cap and start the engine, letting it idle for a few minutes. Shut down, allow it to cool, then remove the drain bolt to release the flush water. Repeat if the water isn't clear.
- Reinstall and tighten the drain bolt. Be careful not to overtighten–just snug it with a hand tool.
- Add new coolant. Fill the radiator slowly with your chosen coolant. Stop when coolant sits near the base of the filler neck. Squeeze the radiator hoses gently to help purge trapped air. Top off as necessary during this step.
- Remove trapped air. With the radiator cap still off, start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds. Carefully watch for bubbles rising–this is air escaping. Shut off, let it cool, and top off if needed.
- Fill the overflow tank. The KDX220 features a small overflow reservoir on the left side. Fill to the "Full" mark with coolant.
- Reinstall the radiator cap. Ensure it is fully seated and tightened.
- Check for leaks. Start the engine and let it run until fully warmed up. Inspect around the drain bolt, radiator, and hoses for any leaks. After a complete cool-down, verify radiator and overflow levels again–top up as needed.
