Step-by-Step Coolant Change Procedure
- Ensure Safety: Begin with your XT225 completely cool and parked upright on a stand. Do not attempt to drain a hot system–steam and hot coolant can cause burns.
- Access the Radiator Cap: Remove any plastic shrouds or covers obstructing the radiator. On the XT225, you usually only need to undo a few screws to reach the cap near the top of the left side of the frame.
- Open the Radiator Cap: Slowly twist open the radiator cap to relieve any residual pressure.
- Locate and Remove the Drain Bolt: Find the coolant drain bolt–usually at the water pump area, low on the right side of the engine. Place your drain pan beneath and remove the bolt with an 8mm wrench, allowing coolant to fully drain.

If desired, tip the bike gently from side to side to ensure complete emptying. - Flush (Optional): For best results, flush the system with distilled water–replace the drain bolt temporarily, fill the radiator with distilled water, run the engine for a minute, let cool, then drain again.
- Reinstall Drain Bolt: Once draining and flushing is complete, clean the drain bolt and reinstall it. Consider using a fresh sealing washer if the old one appears worn.
Tighten the bolt securely but do not overtighten to avoid stripping the threads. - Refill Coolant: Using a funnel, pour new coolant into the radiator up to the base of the filler neck. If using concentrate, mix with distilled water (typically 50/50 unless noted otherwise).
For very hot climates, slightly increase distilled water ratio for optimal cooling. - Bleed Air from System: Start the engine with the radiator cap off. Idle for 1-2 minutes, gently revving and rocking the bike to help trapped air escape. Watch for the coolant level to drop; top off if needed. When the level stabilizes, shut off the engine and let it cool completely.
- Top Up and Check Levels: Fill coolant reservoir (if equipped) to the Full line. Once cool, check the radiator again-it should reach the filler neck base. Replace and tighten the cap.
- Reinstall Panels: Put any removed bodywork or covers back in place.
