Before You Start
- Park the bike on a level surface and allow the engine to cool completely. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine to prevent injury from scalding fluids or steam–make sure the cap is cool to the touch.
- Gather tools: a drain pan, 8mm socket or wrench, new coolant (50/50 mix of approved engine coolant & distilled water recommended), funnel, shop rags.
Draining the Old Coolant
- Locate the radiator cap on top of the left side radiator. Remove the cap by turning it counterclockwise and set aside.
- Find the coolant drain bolt on the lower side of the water pump (right engine side). Place your drain pan underneath.
- Loosen and remove the drain bolt. Allow all coolant to flow out. Inspect the old coolant for contamination—if you see debris or oil, investigate further before adding new coolant.
Optional Coolant System Flush
- For a thorough clean, you may flush the system with distilled water. Pour in water, reinstall the drain bolt, briefly start the engine (30–60 seconds), then drain again. Repeat until drained water runs clean. Never run the engine without coolant for more than a short moment.
- If swapping between water-based and non-water-based coolant, compressed air can be used to clear remaining fluid from hoses—avoid using garden hose water, as minerals can damage the system.
Filling with Fresh Coolant
- Reinstall the drain bolt and tighten securely.
- Using a funnel, slowly add 800 ml of approved coolant blend into the radiator—do not overfill.
- Allow air bubbles to escape as you fill. Gently tip the bike side to side to help trapped air work out of the system.
Final Steps and Bleeding Air
- Replace and secure the radiator cap–ensure it seats fully to maintain proper pressure and prevent overflow.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes. Rev periodically to circulate coolant.
- Shut off engine and let it cool fully. Check the coolant level again. Top off as needed—the level should be to the bottom of the filler neck.
RM125 Specific Notes
- No overflow tank: Unlike many bikes, the 2003 RM125 has no overflow reservoir, meaning any drops in coolant level will be seen in the radiator neck. Check and top off the level before every ride during heavy use or after recent coolant changes.
- Monitor for leaks at hose connections and the water pump cover; improper sealing can cause loss of coolant and overheating.
