How to Change the Coolant in a 2003 KTM 250SX: MotoSport Guide

Regularly maintaining your 2003 KTM 250SX includes changing the coolant–critical for preventing engine overheating, corrosion, and wear. This model uses a 2-stroke engine with a relatively small coolant capacity, making timely coolant replacement especially important for optimal performance and longevity. Tools & Supplies Needed
- Metric socket or wrench set (8mm and 10mm recommended)
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Fresh coolant–use a 40% coolant to 60% water mix compatible with aluminum radiators
- Clean rags
- Protective gloves
Step 1: Preparation
- Allow the engine to cool completely before servicing. Hot coolant and pressurized radiators can cause harm.
- Position your dirt bike on a stable, upright stand to avoid spillage and ensure efficient draining.
Step 2: Remove the Radiator Cap
- Locate the radiator cap on top of the left radiator. Slowly open the cap to release any residual pressure.
Step 3: Drain the Old Coolant
- Locate the coolant drain screw at the bottom of the water pump cover (8mm bolt).
- Place a drain pan beneath the water pump and remove the drain screw. Allow all coolant to fully drain from the system.
- For a more thorough drain, slightly tilt the bike right (about 30 degrees) so the right radiator empties completely.
Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Screw
- Inspect and clean the drain screw and its sealing washer for damage or wear. Replace if necessary.
- Reinstall and tighten the drain screw securely–avoid overtightening.
Step 5: Fill with Fresh Coolant
- Mix fresh coolant at 40% antifreeze to 60% distilled water, unless using a premixed product.
- Pour approximately 0.50 liters (0.13 US gallons) of coolant into the left radiator using a funnel.
- Remove the small bleeder screw on the right radiator. Gently tilt the bike to the right and add coolant to the left radiator until coolant flows out bubble-free from the right-side bleeder hole. Reinstall the bleeder screw quickly to avoid air entering.
- Return the bike upright and continue filling until coolant sits about 10mm (0.4 inches) above the top of the radiator fins in the left radiator.
Step 6: Bleed and Check the System
- Start the engine and let it idle briefly with the radiator cap off, topping off as needed if the level drops.
- As the engine warms, gently squeeze the upper radiator hose to help dislodge trapped air.
- Refit the radiator cap, checking carefully for leaks at all points.
Step 7: Clean Up and Dispose Properly
- Wipe any spilled coolant from all surfaces–coolant can damage paint and plastics.
- Dispose of old coolant at a certified recycling center. Never pour coolant onto the ground or into drains.
Special Notes for 2003 KTM 250SX Owners
- This model’s total coolant volume is fairly low; running low or poor-quality coolant risks overheating and serious engine damage.
- Only use coolants safe for magnesium and aluminum engine parts. Avoid "universal" automotive coolants with silicates or phosphates, which may corrode KTM radiator materials.
- Coolant leaks around the water pump may indicate the need to replace the internal seal–inspect regularly for telltale drips.
- Radiator fins are soft and can bend easily–handle with care during service.
