Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Ensure the bike is cool
    Never service a hot engine or radiator, as hot coolant can cause burns. Allow the bike to cool completely.
  2. Remove seat & side panel
    Use the 8mm socket to take off the left side panel, exposing the coolant overflow reservoir and making access easier.
    Remove the seat if needed for easier access to the radiator cap.
  3. Remove the radiator cap

  4. Drain the old coolant

    Fill the overflow reservoir to its indicated "Full" mark.
  8. Bleed the system
    Tilt the bike side to side and gently squeeze the radiator hoses to help release air bubbles.
    If your KLX400R has a radiator bleed screw, open it briefly during filling to let trapped air escape. Close when coolant appears.
  9. Reinstall radiator cap and panels
    Confirm the cap seals well. Reinstall the seat and side panel.
  10. Heat cycle the engine
    Start the bike and let it idle until it reaches full operating temperature (at least until the fan would kick on, if equipped). Watch the coolant level in the overflow as the engine heats. After running, shut down and let the bike cool completely.
    Recheck the coolant level in both radiator and overflow – top off if needed.
  11. Final check
    Inspect for leaks around the drain bolt, hoses, and radiator cap after your first ride.
