Cool Down the Engine

Remove the Radiator Cap

Drain the Coolant
Place your drain pan below the water pump. Locate the drain bolt – typically at the lowest point of the pump cover on the right side of the engine. Loosen and remove the drain bolt with a 10mm socket. Allow all old coolant to fully drain.
Tip: Remove the radiator cap before this step for maximum flow if you haven't already. -
Flush the System (Optional, but recommended)
For a thorough service, pour distilled water into the radiator, reinstall the drain bolt, and run the engine briefly (30–60 seconds). Then repeat the drain step. Repeat until drained water is clear. -
Install Drain Bolt and Crush Washer
Inspect the crush washer and replace if worn. Reinstall the drain bolt and tighten securely without overtightening. -
Add New Coolant
Use a funnel and pour the correct coolant into the radiator until it's even with the filler neck. -
Bleed Air from the System
With the cap off, gently rock the bike side to side to release any trapped bubbles. Top off coolant as needed to maintain the right level. -
Run the Motor and Recheck Coolant Level
Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes to circulate the coolant and purge more air. Watch the coolant level and top off as necessary. -
Final Assembly
Replace the radiator cap securely, reinstall the radiator shroud and seat.
Important Notes for 2002 XR250R Owners
- Only use coolant safe for aluminum radiators to avoid corrosion damage common to XR-series water jackets.
- If your cooling system uses a sight glass or expansion bottle, check and fill this as well after bleeding air from the radiator.
