Step 1: Prepare Your DR-Z250

  • Park the bike on a level surface and allow the engine to cool completely. Never open the radiator cap or drain coolant when the engine is hot–serious burns can result.
  • Remove the right side panel and, if necessary, the seat and fuel tank to access the radiator cap and fill neck.

Step 2: Draining the Old Coolant

  • Locate the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover (bottom right side of the engine). Place your drain pan directly beneath it.
  • Slowly loosen and remove the radiator cap to relieve any internal pressure in the system.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the drain bolt. Allow all the coolant to flow out. To ensure complete drainage, open the small coolant bleed screw located on the water neck at the top front of the cylinder head (if equipped; some DR-Z250s may not have this feature).
  • If your DR-Z250 has an overflow reservoir, carefully drain that as well.

Step 3: Flushing the Cooling System (Optional but Recommended)

  • If your old coolant appeared dirty or rusty, flush the system with distilled water. Reinstall the drain bolt, fill the radiator with distilled water, run the engine for a minute, then drain once more. Repeat until the fluid runs clear.

Step 4: Filling with Fresh Coolant

  • Reinstall the drain bolt and tighten securely (do not overtighten).
  • Slowly fill the right radiator with new coolant via the filler neck. If your DR-Z250 has a coolant bleed screw on the water neck or the left radiator, open these a few turns as you fill. This helps purge trapped air from the system.
  • Once coolant flows steadily from the bleed points, close them and continue filling until the radiator is full.
  • Gently rock the bike from side to side—this helps release additional air pockets. Top off the radiator as needed.
  • Add coolant to the overflow reservoir up to the F (Full) line.

Step 5: Bleeding & Final Checks

  • Reinstall the radiator cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle until it reaches normal operating temperature. Watch temperature closely; do not leave the bike unattended.
  • Allow the bike to cool completely. Remove the radiator cap again and check the level. Top off if necessary and reinstall the cap.
  • Verify that there are no leaks at the drain bolt, bleed screws, or radiator seams.

Notes Specific to the 2001 Suzuki DR-Z250

  • Some DR-Z250 models feature a bleed screw on the water neck; others do not. Bleed trapped air carefully, as air pockets can cause overheating.
  • The DR-Z250 has a robust air-cooled engine, but trapped air after a coolant change is a common cause of overheating complaints. Always double-check for air in the system after refilling.
  • Coolant should be changed every two years or 8,000 km for typical riding conditions. Severe use (racing, dusty, or muddy conditions) may require more frequent service.
