  • Socket set or 10mm hex wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • New engine coolant (suitable for aluminum radiators, 50:50-40:60 premix with distilled water)

  • Torque wrench (for bleeder bolt)

Step 1: Prepare the Bike

  • Ensure the engine is completely cool before starting service.
  • Place the bike on a stable stand.

Step 2: Remove the Radiator Cap

  • Remove the small screw securing the radiator cap.
  • Slowly remove the cap to relieve any residual pressure.

Step 3: Drain the Old Coolant

  • Locate the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover (10mm hex).
  • Place a drain pan underneath and remove the bolt to allow coolant to drain.

Step 5: Reinstall Drain Bolt

  • Water Neck Bleeder (if equipped): Locate the air bleed screw on the water neck at the top front of the cylinder head. Open it a few turns–do not remove it completely.
  • Left Radiator Bleed Screw (if equipped): Open this a few turns. If your neck points straight up, a bleed screw is not present; skip this item.

Step 7: Add New Coolant

  • Slowly pour new coolant into the right radiator, allowing air to escape through any opened bleeder screws.
  • Once coolant comes out without bubbles at the water neck bleeder, snug the screw to 6.0 N·m (0.6 kgf-m, 4.3 lb-ft).
  • As coolant comes out of the left radiator bleeder, snug it down.
  • Keep filling until the right radiator is topped.
  • Lean the bike gently to the left and right–this helps remaining air reach the radiator neck.
  • Top off again as needed.

Step 8: Seal the System

  • Install the radiator cap securely.

Step 9: Heat Cycle & Recheck

  • Start the engine and let it idle to reach normal operating temperature. Keep a close watch; the DRZ400E can overheat quickly if large air pockets are present.
  • Once warm, shut off the engine and let it cool completely.
  • Remove the radiator cap and verify coolant level. Top off if necessary.
  • Add about one inch of coolant to the overflow bottle if equipped.
