  • Distilled water (optional for flushing)
  • Ratchet set – including 8mm or 10mm sockets
  • Drain pan
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Shop towels or rags
  • New drain bolt washer (recommended, for a proper seal)
  • Safety gloves & eye protection

Preparation – Safety First

  • Ensure the engine is completely cool. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine, as superheated coolant under pressure can cause severe burns.
  • Position the bike upright on level ground, ideally with a stand for best access.

Step 1: Remove Seat & Side Panels

  • Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove seat and side covers as needed for access to the radiator cap and overflow bottle. On the 1992 DR250S, this usually means removing at least the left side cover.

Step 2: Drain Old Coolant

  • Place the drain pan beneath the water pump housing on the lower right side of the engine.
  • Slowly loosen – then remove – the radiator cap (top left side under the tank). If you hear a hiss, wait for all pressure to release before fully removing.
  • Remove the coolant drain bolt at the bottom of the water pump. Allow all coolant to flow into the pan. Tilt the bike gently if needed for complete drainage.

Step 3: Flush (Optional but Recommended)

  • Replace the drain bolt and fill the system with distilled water.
  • Reinstall radiator cap and briefly run the engine to circulate the water (1–2 minutes max).
  • Let it cool, then drain again. Repeat if the water is especially dirty.

Step 4: Refill With Fresh Coolant

  • With the drain bolt and washer back in place, fill the radiator slowly with new coolant. For the DR250S, capacity is approximately 950 ml (1 US quart).
  • Fill until coolant is visible near the bottom of the neck.
  • If your overflow bottle was removed, reinstall and fill to the LOW (L) mark.

Step 5: Bleed the System

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes with the radiator cap off. Squeeze the radiator hose gently to help release trapped air bubbles.
  • If coolant level drops, top off until steady.
  • Install the radiator cap securely and top off the overflow bottle to the FULL (F) mark.

Step 6: Finish Up

  • Check drain areas for leaks.
  • Reinstall side panels and seat.
  • Dispose of old coolant responsibly. Never dump in drains or on soil.
