Changing the coolant in your 1985 Yamaha YZ80 is essential for keeping your two-stroke motor running at peak performance. While this process is straightforward, it's critical to pay careful attention to air bubbles, sealing washers, and correct coolant levels due to the bike's closely packed engine and radiator system. What You'll Need
- Correct coolant (pre-mixed or mixed to spec, phosphate-free for older YZs)
- Fresh sealing washer for the drain bolt
- Phillips screwdriver and socket set
- Drain pan

1. Prepping Your YZ80
- Make sure the engine is completely cool before starting.
- Set the bike upright on a stand for stability.
- Remove the seat and radiator shrouds if needed for better access.
2. Draining the Old Coolant
- Locate the water pump drain bolt on the left side at the bottom of the water pump cover.
- Place your pan under the drain bolt and slowly loosen it to let coolant start draining. Remove the radiator cap to speed this up.
- Inspect the old coolant for rust or debris–milky or oily coolant could indicate other engine issues.
- Discard the old sealing washer and replace with a new one before reinstalling the drain bolt.
3. Optional: Flushing the System
- If the coolant was dirty or it's been a long time, pour distilled water into the radiator, reinstall the cap and run the engine for a minute. Cool, then drain again.
- Repeat this process at least once with fresh distilled water until only clean flush drains out.
4. Filling with New Coolant
- Slowly pour the new coolant into the radiator filler neck using a funnel to avoid spills and air bubbles.
- Squeeze radiator hoses gently to help remove any trapped air.
- Rock the bike side to side to further dislodge air pockets.
- Fill until the coolant is level with the bottom of the filler neck, then close the cap loosely.
5. Bleeding Air & Checking Levels
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Blip the throttle gently several times to about half throttle to work bubbles out.
- Shut off the engine, let it cool fully, and re-check the coolant level. If dropped, top up as needed.
- Top off the expansion tank if present–your YZ80 may not have one, but check under the right shroud if unsure.
- Reinstall the radiator cap and plastics.
6. Clean Up & Used Coolant Disposal
- Wipe up any spilled coolant on the frame or engine.
- Never pour coolant down the drain or into the ground. Bottle it and take it to an appropriate recycling center or auto shop.

- The 1985 YZ80 uses a smaller, high-revving liquid-cooled engine. Due to its compact radiator configuration, air bubbles can easily get trapped–so repeat the bleed and refill process if in doubt.
- Avoid using tap water or automotive antifreeze containing silicates, as these can damage two-stroke water pumps and corrode old-school radiators.
