How to Change the Coolant in a 1982 Yamaha YZ100

The 1982 Yamaha YZ100 is a classic air-cooled two-stroke dirt bike – different from most modern water-cooled motocross bikes. However, for YZ100 models featuring a liquid-cooled system (introduced in limited late 1980s YZ models), periodic coolant changes are essential to maintain cooling efficiency and prevent engine overheating. Even if your '82 YZ100 is air cooled, understanding the process is helpful for owners of similar or modified YZs.
Note: The majority of 1982 Yamaha YZ100 motorcycles are air cooled and do not have a coolant system. If your model is liquid cooled (rare factory edition or aftermarket conversion), the instructions below apply. Always verify your bike's cooling system type before proceeding.

- Distilled water (if mixing coolant concentrate)

Step-by-Step Coolant Change Guide
- Ensure the engine is cool. Never attempt to open the radiator cap on a hot engine, as hot coolant is under pressure.
- Remove seat & side panels (if needed) to access the radiator.
- Place a drain pan underneath the engine or radiator.
- Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve any residual pressure.
- Locate & remove the coolant drain bolt at the bottom of the water pump or engine. Some YZ models also require loosening a bolt on the cylinder to drain the system completely.
- Allow coolant to drain completely. Tilt the bike back and forth slightly for best results. Dispose of old coolant responsibly—it is toxic to people and animals.

Flush the system (optional but recommended):
- Pour distilled water into the radiator, re-install the cap, and briefly start the engine.
- Let the engine run for a minute, then shut off and drain the water.
- Repeat until the drained water runs clear.
- Reinstall the drain bolt. Use a new sealing washer if available, and tighten to specification (do not overtighten to avoid stripping threads).
- Fill the radiator with fresh coolant. Pour slowly to the base of the filler neck, allowing air bubbles to escape.
- "Burp" the radiator: With the radiator cap off, briefly start the bike and gently rev the throttle. This encourages trapped air to exit the system.
- Top off the coolant if necessary and reinstall the radiator cap securely.
- Idle the engine until warm, then let it cool fully. Recheck coolant level and top off as needed.
Special Notes for the 1982 Yamaha YZ100 Owner
- Most 1982 YZ100s are air cooled: If your YZ100 has cooling fins on the cylinder head and no radiator, it requires no coolant or coolant changes—maintenance consists of keeping the fins clean and unobstructed.
- If your YZ100 is a rare liquid-cooled version or has a conversion kit, always use the type of coolant recommended for aluminum motorcycle engines. Avoid mixing coolant types to prevent corrosion and system damage.
- Check hoses and clamps for deterioration every time you service the coolant. Damaged hoses can lead to leaks and overheating.
- Flush coolant system every 24 months or 24,000 miles, or sooner if the coolant appears rusty or cloudy.
