How to Bleed & Replace Brake Fluid on a 2024 Can-Am Outlander MAX 500 DPS
Shop parts for a 2024 CAN-AM OLM500DPS ATV.
This MotoSport-exclusive guide walks you through a safe, complete brake fluid change & bleed for the 2024 Can-Am Outlander MAX 500 DPS. Follow these steps carefully and only work on a cooled ATV in a well-ventilated area. Use DOT 4 brake fluid unless the owner’s manual specifies otherwise; never mix DOT 3/4 with DOT 5 silicone fluids.
Tools & supplies
- DOT 4 brake fluid (clean, unopened)
- Clear plastic tubing that fits bleed nipples
- Catch bottle for old fluid
- Turkey baster, syringe, or fluid pump
- Wrenches for bleed nipples (typically 8 mm) and caliper bolts
- Torque wrench
- Brake cleaner, rags, gloves, eye protection
- Jack or ramps and stands rated for ATVs
- Assistant (recommended) or one-way vacuum bleeder
Model notes owners should know
- The 2024 Outlander MAX 500 DPS has hydraulic disc brakes with a single master reservoir feeding multiple calipers; bleed sequence matters – bleed the caliper farthest from the master cylinder first.
- DPS (Dynamic Power Steering) uses a separate hydraulic system — do not confuse DPS fluid with brake fluid. DPS reservoir location is different; keep fluids isolated.
- Brake lines and fittings on this MMY are OEM-rated; inspect for chafing, corrosion, or soft lines before reassembly.
- If you notice spongy brakes after bleeding, check for air in line, leaking connections, or a failing master cylinder. Never ride with spongy brakes.
- Always dispose of used brake fluid properly. Brake fluid damages paint & plastics — clean spills immediately.
Preparation
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake, remove keys.
- Remove cargo & accessories near the work area. Block the ATV and lift or use stands to access wheels if you plan to remove them for easier caliper access.
- Clean around the master cylinder reservoir cap and wipe away dirt to prevent contamination.
- Open the reservoir, carefully remove old fluid level with a turkey baster or syringe, and wipe inside with a lint-free rag. Refill to the “max” line with fresh DOT 4 fluid.
Bleed sequence
Follow farthest-to-nearest logic relative to the master cylinder. Typical sequence for Outlander MAX 500 DPS is: rear caliper(s) farthest from master, then the front calipers, finishing with the caliper closest to the master. If unsure, identify which caliper is farthest and start there.
Two-person pump-and-hold method (recommended)
- Place clear tubing over the bleed nipple of the target caliper and route into a catch bottle partially filled with clean fluid to maintain a closed system.
- Assistant slowly applies steady pressure to the brake pedal or lever (do not hold to full lock). You open the bleed nipple slightly with the wrench until fluid runs through tubing, then close it before the assistant releases the pedal. Repeat until fluid runs clear and free of air bubbles.
- Top up the master reservoir frequently to prevent it from running dry and drawing air in. Keep the cap loosely in place with diaphragm (if applicable) to minimize contamination.
- When the fluid is clear and bubble-free, tighten the bleed nipple to spec (snug; avoid over-torquing). Wipe fittings and move to the next caliper in the sequence.
One-person vacuum or pressure bleeder method
- Attach vacuum bleeder to the bleed nipple or connect a pressure bleeder to the master reservoir per the tool instructions.
- Operate the tool while a single operator pumps the brake lever to purge lines. Monitor reservoir level closely and refill as required.
- Proceed through the bleed sequence as above until clear fluid and no bubbles appear.
Finishing steps
- Top the master reservoir to the correct level, reinstall the cap, and ensure it seals properly.
- Torque caliper(s) and wheel fasteners to factory specs; if uncertain, consult the Can-Am service manual for exact torque values.
- Clean any spilled fluid, reinstall wheels if removed, and lower the ATV to ground.
- Firmly pump the brake lever/pedal several times to confirm a firm, consistent feel before moving.
- Road-test at low speed in a safe area to verify braking performance and absence of leaks.
Troubleshooting & safety reminders
- If brakes remain spongy after thorough bleeding, suspect internal master cylinder air or a caliper leak — stop and inspect.
- Never ride until brakes feel firm and consistent. A partial bleed is risky.
- Use only the specified DOT fluid for the vehicle. Mixing fluid types can damage seals and degrade performance.
- Protect painted surfaces from spilled fluid; clean with water and mild detergent immediately.
- If you are not comfortable performing this maintenance, have it done by a certified technician.
Keeping fresh brake fluid and air-free lines ensures reliable stopping power on your 2024 Can-Am Outlander MAX 500 DPS. Regular inspection of lines, calipers, and the master cylinder will help you catch issues early and keep your ride safe.
