This MotoSport guide walks you step-by-step through draining, flushing, and bleeding the brake system on a 2024 Can-Am Outlander 850 (OL850). Follow the procedures below to keep braking crisp and safe. Work on a level surface, use personal protective equipment, and keep brake fluid off paint and rubber.
What you need
- DOT 4 brake fluid (fresh, unopened container)
- Clear hose to fit bleed nipples
- Catch bottle for old fluid
- Brake bleeder wrench or appropriate box wrench
- Turkey baster or fluid suction pump (optional)
- Clean rags and isopropyl alcohol for cleanup
- Zip ties or clamps to secure lines during bleeding
- Assistant (recommended for manual two-person bleed) or vacuum/pressure bleeder
Model notes — 2024 Can-Am Outlander 850
- The Outlander 850 typically uses DOT 4 brake fluid. Use only fresh DOT 4 and avoid mixing fluid types.
- The bike-grade hydraulic system has separate master cylinder/reservoir(s) for front and rear circuits on many trim levels; locate the reservoir(s) on the handlebars (front) and rear master cylinder near the foot controls.
- If your OL850 is equipped with ABS or electronic brake systems, electrical connectors and ABS valves exist in the system. Do not open ABS valve bodies; if ABS bleeding is required, use the manufacturer-specific procedure or have a dealer perform ABS bleed to avoid system damage.
- Brake lines and fittings on the OL850 are factory-crimped stainless or rubber lines; inspect for chafing, corrosion, or damage while you have the system open.
- Torque values for caliper banjo bolts and brake line fittings should follow the service manual. If you don't have the manual on hand, secure fittings snugly and use a torque wrench with factory specs before road use.
Preparation
- Park on level ground, put the machine in park and block wheels. Remove wheels or panels if required for access.
- Clean reservoir caps and surrounding area to keep dirt out. Remove the cap and diaphragm; keep the reservoir top covered with clean shop towel to minimize contamination while you work.
- If fluid is very dark or contaminated, siphon old fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster before starting to reduce contamination during the flush.
Bleed order
Common proven sequence for Outlander 4x4 machines:
- Rear caliper (if single rear circuit)
- Right front caliper
- Left front caliper
- Final check — operate lever/pedal and recheck level
Note: If your model has separate reservoirs for front/rear, bleed each circuit separately, starting with the furthest caliper from the associated master cylinder.
Two methods: two-person manual and vacuum/pressure bleeder
Two-person manual bleed
- Fill reservoir with DOT 4. Keep the cap slightly loose but covered to avoid contamination.
- Attach clear hose to bleed nipple and route to catch bottle partially filled with fluid to prevent air being sucked back in. Place a wrench on the nipple.
- Have your assistant slowly depress and hold the brake lever/pedal. Open the bleed nipple about a quarter turn. Fluid & air will flow into the hose. Close the nipple before your assistant releases the lever/pedal.
- Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid appears and the lever/pedal feels firm. Keep reservoir topped off during the process so it never runs dry.
- Torque bleed nipple to factory spec and move to next caliper in sequence.
Vacuum bleeder (recommended for solo jobs)
- Attach vacuum pump hose to bleed nipple and connect pump per tool instructions. Fill the reservoir before applying vacuum.
- Open the nipple and draw fluid until clear, bubble-free fluid flows and the reservoir remains filled.
- Close the nipple while vacuum is applied to prevent air ingress, then release vacuum and remove the tool.
Pressure bleeder (fastest, best for complete flush)
- Pressurize the brake fluid reservoir with a pressure bleeder capped per tool instructions (do not exceed tool limits). Start with low pressure (typically 1-2 psi) and increase only as recommended by the tool.
- Open bleeders in sequence until fluid runs clear. Watch reservoir level and refill as needed.
Full fluid replacement (flush)
- To fully replace old fluid, pump new fluid into the system while bleeding each caliper until the expelled fluid matches the new fluid color. Avoid prolonged exposure of the system to air.
- After bleeding all points, top each reservoir to the proper level, reinstall the cap and diaphragm, and wipe down any spilled fluid with isopropyl alcohol.
Final checks
- Check lever/pedal feel — it should be firm and consistent. Spongy feel indicates air remains in system; repeat bleeding.
- Inspect for leaks at banjo bolts, bleed nipples and master cylinder seals. Tighten to spec if required.
- Test brakes at low speed in a safe area before regular riding.
- Properly dispose of old brake fluid per local regulations.
Tips & cautions
- Never let the master cylinder reservoir run dry — introducing air complicates bleeding.
- DOT 4 absorbs moisture with time; if fluid appears dark or you don't know service history, flush the entire system.
- Avoid spilling fluid on painted surfaces or rubber; it will damage finishes. Rinse immediately with water if contact occurs.
- If the bike has ABS, do not try to cycle ABS valves by powering the ABS module without following manufacturer service procedures.
- If you encounter persistent sponginess after repeated bleeding, suspect trapped air in ABS modulator, collapsed hose, damaged master cylinder, or worn caliper seals — have a technician inspect.
When to call a pro
- If your Outlander 850 has ABS and you cannot achieve firm pedal/lever feel after conventional bleeding.
- If you find corroded lines, damaged calipers or leaking master cylinder components.
- If you're unsure of torque specs for fittings or how to safely service ABS components.
