This MotoSport proprietary guide walks you step by step through replacing the brake fluid and bleeding the brakes on a 2022 Can-Am Renegade 1000 X XC. Follow every safety precaution, work calmly, and consult your service manual for torque specs and any model-specific illustrations.

What you need

  • DOT 4 brake fluid (use fresh, unopened fluid only)
  • Clear plastic tubing to fit bleed nipples
  • Catch container for old fluid
  • Wrenches sized for bleed nipples and banjo bolts
  • Clean lint-free rags and isopropyl alcohol for cleanup
  • Brake-bleeding tool or vacuum/pressure bleeder (optional but recommended)
  • Assistant for manual pump-and-open method (if not using a vacuum/pressure system)
  • Gloves and eye protection

Model notes — 2022 Can-Am Renegade 1000 X XC

  • The Renegade 1000 X XC uses DOT 4 hydraulic fluid; do not substitute DOT 3, silicone, or mineral oil.
  • Locate the brake fluid reservoir(s) before starting: the hand/front master cylinder reservoir is on the right handlebar area; the rear/master (if separate) or combination reservoir will be under the bodywork/seat area. Confirm which system controls which calipers on your machine.
  • Brake components on this model are exposed to mud and water. Clean around the reservoir cap, master cylinder, and bleed nipples thoroughly to avoid contamination entering the system when opened.
  • If your Renegade has any factory-installed electronic brake aids or wheel sensors, avoid contaminating electrical connectors with fluid; isolate and cover them during the job.
  • Always refer to the factory service manual for banjo-bolt torque specs and any component replacement intervals.

Preparation

  1. Work on a level surface, engine off, key removed. Secure the vehicle with blocks so wheels don’t move.
  2. Clean the reservoir cap & surrounding area with alcohol; remove the cap and diaphragm carefully to avoid dirt falling in.
  3. Top the reservoir with DOT 4 fluid to the MAX line and keep the cap loosely in place during bleeding to limit contamination and slow evaporation.
  4. Identify the bleed nipple(s) on each caliper and fit clear tubing to each nipple, routing the other end into a catch bottle partially filled with a little fresh fluid to avoid sucking air back in.

Bleeding order

Always start with the caliper farthest from the master cylinder and work toward the nearest. Typical order on most Renegade setups:

  • Farthest caliper (often rear right)
  • Rear left (if applicable)
  • Front right
  • Front left (nearest)

Method A — Two-person pump-and-hold

  1. Have an assistant pump the brake lever/pedal slowly 6–8 times and hold firm.
  2. Open the bleed nipple about one turn to let fluid and air escape into the tubing; close the nipple before the assistant releases the lever/pedal.
  3. Repeat pump, open, close cycle until clear, bubble-free fluid runs out and no air appears.
  4. Keep the reservoir topped during the entire process to prevent air entry into the master cylinder.
  5. Proceed to the next caliper following the bleed order.

Method B — Vacuum or pressure bleeder (recommended for a single operator)

  1. Attach the vacuum bleeder to the bleed nipple or use a pressure bleeder on the reservoir per the tool instructions.
  2. Open the bleed nipple and run the tool until fluid flows clean and bubble-free; close the nipple before removing the tool or releasing pressure.
  3. Repeat for each caliper in the correct order, keeping the reservoir topped between positions.

Flushing the system

Replace all fluid in the system. Continue bleeding until the fluid coming out matches the new fluid color and clarity. For a full flush, cycle until no old darker fluid remains from each caliper and the reservoir shows only fresh fluid.

Finishing up

  • Once each caliper is bled, tighten bleed nipples securely and wipe away any spilled fluid immediately. Brake fluid damages paint and plastics.
  • Replace the reservoir diaphragm and cap, ensuring a good seal. Clean the area again.
  • Test lever and pedal feel: lever should be firm with no sponginess. If soft, repeat bleeding until firm.
  • Lower the vehicle, remove wheel chocks, and perform a low-speed brake test in a safe area to confirm proper operation.
  • Properly dispose of old brake fluid according to local regulations.

Safety & troubleshooting tips

  • If you see persistent bubbles, suspect an air leak at line fittings, the master cylinder, or a collapsed flexible hose. Tighten fittings and inspect hoses; replace damaged parts.
  • Do not let the reservoir run dry at any point — introducing air into the master cylinder will require starting the bleed process over.
  • If the master cylinder itself is contaminated or the brake lever/pedal continues to feel soft after proper bleeding, the master cylinder may need rebuilding or replacement.
  • Keep brake fluid away from painted surfaces; wash immediately with water if contact occurs.

Performing regular brake fluid replacement and bleeding keeps stopping performance consistent and extends caliper and master cylinder life. For model-specific parts and brake components designed to fit your 2022 Can-Am Renegade 1000 X XC, visit our MotoSport parts page above.
