How to Bleed & Replace Brake Fluid on a 2021 Polaris Scrambler 850

This MotoSport-exclusive procedure walks you through safely flushing and replacing the brake fluid on a 2021 Polaris Scrambler 850. Follow these steps carefully. If your machine is equipped with any electronic brake-assist or factory ABS, stop and consult an authorized Polaris dealer; this guide covers conventional hydraulic systems only.

Tools & supplies

  • DOT 4 brake fluid (or the specification printed on your Scrambler’s reservoir cap)
  • Clear plastic tubing to fit bleed nipple
  • Catch bottle for old fluid
  • Wrench set (open-end or flare nut for bleed nipples)
  • Socket set and torque wrench for caliper/resevoir fasteners
  • Syringe or fluid-transfer pump (optional but recommended)
  • Rubber gloves, shop rags, and isopropyl alcohol
  • Jack or lift to raise the ATV so wheels can turn freely

Safety & prep

  • Work on a flat, stable surface with the engine off and key removed.
  • Protect painted surfaces – brake fluid damages paint. Cover bodywork with rags or plastic.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection. Dispose of old fluid responsibly.
  • Warm the brakes by making a short ride or applying the brakes repeatedly before bleeding — warm fluid flows better.

Identify reservoirs & bleed nipples

The Scrambler 850 typically has separate master cylinder reservoirs for front and rear brakes. Locate the master cylinder reservoirs near the handlebar (front) and near the rear brake pedal (rear). Locate each caliper’s bleed nipple — usually on the caliper body at the highest practical point. Clean the area around caps and nipples before opening.

Basic method & bleed order

Always keep the reservoir cap and diaphragm removed only as long as needed and keep the reservoir topped up during bleeding to avoid introducing air. Bleed in the correct sequence: start at the caliper farthest from the master cylinder, then proceed to the next farthest, finishing with the closest caliper.

Two recommended methods

1) Two-person pump-and-hold method

  1. Raise the ATV so wheels can turn and park securely.
  2. Clean the reservoir cap and remove it; remove diaphragm carefully. Keep a clean rag under the cap to catch spills.
  3. Attach clear tubing to the caliper bleed nipple; route tubing into a catch bottle partially filled with a little brake fluid to prevent air backflow.
  4. Have assistant pump the brake pedal/lever several times and hold it down.
  5. Open the bleed nipple with the correct wrench about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn to allow fluid and air to escape. Close the nipple before the assistant releases the pedal/lever.
  6. Repeat pump, hold, open, close cycles until clear fluid with no bubbles flows out. Keep reservoir fluid level topped to avoid drawing air into the system.
  7. Tighten bleed nipple to spec snugness (firmly closed — don’t overtighten). Wipe any spilled fluid and reinstall reservoir diaphragm and cap when finished with that circuit.
  8. Repeat for each caliper in the sequence farthest to closest.

2) Vacuum or pressure-bleeder method (single tech)

  1. Attach vacuum pump to bleed nipple or attach a pressure bleeder to the reservoir per manufacturer instructions.
  2. If using a vacuum pump, open the bleed nipple and pull until clean, bubble-free fluid flows. If using a pressure bleeder, pressurize reservoir and open each bleed nipple in sequence until fluid runs clear.
  3. Maintain reservoir level and close each nipple before moving on.

Flushing & full fluid replacement

If you’re replacing all brake fluid, continue bleeding each circuit until fresh fluid from the master cylinder flows through the hose at each caliper. Use a syringe or fluid pump at the reservoir to remove old fluid and reduce aeration when practical. After finishing all calipers, pump the pedal/lever several times and check for a firm feel.

Post-bleed checks

  • Verify pedal/lever firmness at cold and warm checks. A spongy feel indicates trapped air — repeat the bleed cycle.
  • Inspect for leaks at bleed nipples, lines, fittings, and calipers. Tighten or replace leaking parts.
  • Clean any fluid spills with isopropyl alcohol and water; re-polish paintwork if contact occurred.
  • Properly dispose of used brake fluid at a hazardous-waste facility.

Torque & parts notes specific to the 2021 Scrambler 850

  • Follow Polaris fastener torque values for caliper and reservoir hardware; if you don’t have the manual, tighten caliper bolts evenly and to a firm torque — avoid under- or over-tightening. When in doubt, consult your service manual or MotoSport parts specialists.
  • Use DOT 4 brake fluid unless the reservoir cap specifies otherwise. DOT 4 has higher boiling-point characteristics preferred for heavy-use ATVs like the Scrambler 850.
  • The 850’s brake system runs hotter under heavy towing or aggressive trail use; inspect pads and rotors when changing fluid. Replace pads if thickness is near wear limit and check rotor runout.
  • If your Scrambler has aftermarket brake components or braided lines, bleed normally but inspect fittings for compatibility and condition.

Service interval & tips

  • Replace brake fluid every two years or sooner if the fluid is dark or contaminated.
  • Bleed brakes after any brake-line replacement, caliper service, or if brake pedal/lever feel changes.
  • Keep a maintenance record noting fluid type, date, and mileage/hours.

Troubleshooting

  • Persistent spongy brake feel: repeat bleeding; check hoses for collapse, and inspect the master cylinder for internal leaks.
  • Brake fade or overheating: inspect pads and rotors for glazing; upgrade pads for heavy-duty use if needed.
  • If an ABS or electronic module is present, don’t pressurize the system or disassemble components without dealer guidance.

When in doubt, MotoSport parts & tech specialists can help you find OEM replacement parts or performance upgrades specific to the 2021 Polaris Scrambler 850. Proper bleeding and fluid replacement preserve braking performance and safety – don’t cut corners.
