This MotoSport guide covers a safe, complete brake fluid change and bleed for the 2020 Suzuki King Quad 500AXi 4X4 POWER STEERING. Follow all safety steps, use correct fluids, and take care not to let brake fluid contact painted surfaces.
Important model notes
- The King Quad 500AXi uses a sealed hydraulic system with individual calipers front and rear; DOT4 brake fluid is specified for Suzuki ATVsdo not mix DOT3 and DOT4.
- This model's power steering system is separate from the brakes; there are no shared reservoirs, but avoid contaminating power steering components with brake fluid.
- If your unit has any ABS or electronic braking options fitted after-market or as an uncommon factory option, follow the ABS bleed procedure specific to that system or consult a dealer. Standard 500AXi models use a conventional hydraulic system.
- Protect painted plastics and racks. Brake fluid will damage finish & plastics — immediately rinse any splashes with water.
Tools & materials
- DOT4 brake fluid, fresh (sealed container)
- Brake bleeder kit or clear hose & catch bottle
- 7 or 8 mm wrench for bleeder nipples (confirm size visually)
- Syringe or turkey-baster to remove old fluid from reservoir
- Clean shop rags, gloves, safety glasses
- Jack or ramps and stands to access wheels (if needed)
- Small funnel and non-sparking catch pan
Preparation
- Park the ATV on level ground, engine off, parking brake set, key removed. Remove any cargo to access calipers easily.
- Clean the area around the master cylinder reservoir cap. Remove the cap and diaphragm carefully to avoid debris falling in.
- Use a syringe or turkey-baster to remove as much old fluid from the reservoir as possible without sucking air into the lines.
- Top the reservoir with fresh DOT4 fluid to the specified level. Keep the cap loosely in place between steps to limit contamination and evaporation.
Bleeding order
Bleed starting with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder and work toward the nearest. Typical sequence: rear right, rear left, front right, front left. Confirm reservoir remains above the minimum level throughout the process to avoid air entering the system.
Bleeding methods (choose one)
1. Manual pedal/lever and helper
- Attach clear hose to bleeder nipple and place opposite end in a catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.
- Have a helper slowly squeeze the brake lever/pedal several times and hold it compressed.
- Open the bleeder nipple about 1/4 turn to allow fluid and air to flow until flow is clear, then close the nipple. Tell the helper to release the lever/pedal only after the nipple is closed.
- Repeat until no more air bubbles appear and fluid flows cleanly. Refill reservoir as needed.
2. Vacuum bleeder (recommended for clean, one-person job)
- Attach vacuum bleeder to the bleeder nipple and a clear hose to the catch bottle.
- Open the bleeder valve and run the vacuum tool until clear, bubble-free fluid flows. Close the nipple before removing the vacuum hose.
- Repeat for each caliper, keeping the reservoir topped up.
3. Pressure bleeder (fastest, shop method)
Use a purpose-built pressure bleeder on the reservoir, pressurize per tool instructions, then open each bleeder nipple in sequence until clear fluid flows. Follow tool manufacturer and safety guidelines.
Caliper bleed procedure details
- Start with the farthest wheel. Clean around the bleeder nipple and use the correct wrench.
- Attach hose, crack nipple, bleed until clear. Tighten nipple securely after each caliper; do not overtighten.
- Wipe any spilled fluid immediately. Refill reservoir between wheels so it never drops below the minimum mark.
- Once all four calipers are clear of air, pump the brake lever/pedal with the engine off to confirm firm lever feel. If soft or spongy, recheck for air and repeat bleeding sequence.
Finish & checks
- Ensure all bleeder nipples are tightened to a firm hand/tool torque. Clean and reinstall the reservoir diaphragm and cap.
- Carefully wipe down calipers, lines, and reservoir. Dispose of used fluid in accordance with local regulations.
- Test brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal riding. Check for leaks at bleeder nipples, hose fittings, and master cylinder.
- After a short test ride, recheck fluid level and bleeder nipples.
Maintenance recommendations
- Replace brake fluid every 2 years or sooner if contaminated or if brakes feel soft.
- Inspect brake lines and hoses annually for cracks, swelling, or damage from racks and cargo.
- Store brake fluid sealed and replace any fluid left in an opened bottle if it has been exposed to air for long periods.
Warnings
- Never reuse old brake fluid. Do not mix DOT specifications.
- Protect paint and plastic from spills; brake fluid causes damage.
- If you are not confident in completing a full bleed or if symptoms persist after bleeding, have the system inspected by a qualified technician or MotoSport service provider.
