This MotoSport guide walks you through safely flushing and replacing the brake fluid on a 2020 Can-Am Renegade 570. Follow each step carefully, use the correct fluid, and dispose of old fluid responsibly. If you’re not comfortable performing brake service, have a qualified technician complete the job.
What you need
- DOT 4 brake fluid (factory-recommended)
- Clear plastic tubing sized to bleed nipples
- Brake bleeder container or tubing into a bottle
- Hand vacuum bleeder or one-person pressure/gravity kit (optional)
- Wrenches to open bleed nipples (typically 8mm or 10mm)
- Clean rags and brake cleaner
- Gloves & eye protection
- Plastic or disposable syringe (optional)
- Torque wrench for caliper/bleeder hardware if you plan to remove parts
Pre-service checks & model notes
- The 2020 Can-Am Renegade 570 typically uses DOT 4 brake fluid. Confirm the recommendation on your vehicle’s brake reservoir cap or owner’s manual before starting.
- The Renegade 570 does not have a factory ABS system to complicate bleeding, but the machine’s compact layout means access to calipers and the master cylinder can be tight.
- Park on level ground, engage the parking brake, and support the machine securely before working on wheels or calipers.
- Protect painted surfaces from spilled fluid – brake fluid can damage plastics and paint.
Step 1 – Prepare the machine
- Wash brake area lightly if excessively dirty; let dry.
- Remove wheels or work with the wheels on if you have adequate access to bleed nipples.
- Open the master cylinder reservoir cap and remove any rubber diaphragm. Clean the reservoir cap area to avoid contamination.
- Top up reservoir with fresh DOT 4 fluid so it’s just below the fill line. Keep cap off but cover the opening with clean plastic to limit contamination while you work.
Step 2 – Identify bleed order
Bleed from the caliper farthest from the master cylinder and progress to the nearest. On the Renegade 570 this generally means: far rear caliper first, then closer rear caliper, then the front calipers from far to near. If you’re unsure which is farthest, follow the hose runs or consult the service manual for the master cylinder location.
Step 3 – Bleeding methods (recommended)
Use one of the following proven methods:
- Vacuum bleeder (one-person): Attach clear tubing from bleed nipple to container, apply vacuum, open nipple slightly, pump brake lever slowly until fluid runs clear with no bubbles. Close nipple, release vacuum, repeat at each caliper while keeping reservoir topped up.
- Pressure or gravity kit (one-person): Pressurize reservoir or use gravity feed, crack bleed nipple, allow fluid to flow until clear. Keep reservoir topped up at all times.
- Two-person pump method: Person A pumps the brake lever several times and holds pressure; Person B opens bleed nipple to let fluid out until clear, then closes nipple before lever is released. Repeat until clean fluid and no bubbles.
Step 4 – Step-by-step bleed
- Attach clear tubing to the bleed nipple and submerge the other end in a container partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.
- Open the bleed nipple 1/4 to 1/2 turn. If using vacuum, apply vacuum now. If using two-person method, have the pump person prepare to actuate the lever.
- Operate the brake lever/pedal slowly and steadily. Continue until fluid runs clear and free of bubbles. Check color — old fluid is darker; new fluid is pale and clear.
- While bleeding, keep the reservoir filled to prevent air from being drawn into the master cylinder. Never let the reservoir run dry.
- When clear fluid flows, close the bleed nipple while pressure is applied, then release the lever. Tighten nipple to spec or snug (avoid over-torquing). Wipe any spilled fluid immediately.
- Move to the next caliper and repeat the process until all calipers are bled.
Step 5 – Final checks
- Top the reservoir to the proper level and reinstall the rubber diaphragm and cap securely.
- Pump the brake lever/pedal to verify a firm, consistent feel. If the lever feels spongy, repeat bleeding until firm.
- Inspect all bleed nipples, lines, and fittings for leaks. Torque any caliper bolts removed to the factory specification if applicable.
- Clean any spilled fluid from painted surfaces with a dedicated cleaner and water; replace contaminated rags.
Disposal & safety
- Brake fluid is hazardous waste. Collect used fluid in a sealed container and take it to a hazardous waste disposal facility or auto-parts store that accepts used brake fluid.
- Wear gloves & eye protection. Avoid contact with skin and painted surfaces.
Tips specific to the Renegade 570
- Access can be tight around the swingarm and rear calipers; a short-neck wrench or flare-nut wrench helps prevent rounding bleed nipples.
- If your Renegade has aftermarket exhaust, skid plates, or luggage racks installed, remove or reposition them if they block caliper access.
- Check the condition of brake hoses for cracking near the frame or caliper mounts – 570s used in heavy trail or work duties can show hose wear earlier than street machines.
- Brake master cylinder reservoir on the Renegade is compact; top-up frequently during bleeding to avoid introducing air into the system.
- After a full fluid change, ride slowly and test brakes in a safe area before returning to regular use to confirm braking performance.
When to see a pro
- If the brake lever remains soft after repeated, correctly executed bleeds.
- If you find damaged or corroded lines, fittings, or caliper hardware.
- If you suspect internal master cylinder or caliper seal failure.
Performing a proper brake fluid replacement restores braking performance and extends component life. For parts, fittings, and brake fluid suited to your 2020 Can-Am Renegade 570, use MotoSport’s selection and advice at the link above.
