How to Bleed and Replace Brake Fluid on a 2017 Kawasaki Brute Force 300 2X4

Shop parts for a 2017 Kawasaki Brute Force 300 2X4 ATV.

This MotoSport-exclusive guide walks you through a safe, complete brake fluid change and bleeding procedure for the 2017 Kawasaki Brute Force 300 2X4. Follow every step exactly, work on a level surface, and never mix different fluid types. If you prefer, MotoSport carries the parts and fluids you need.

What you will need

  • DOT-specified brake fluid (check the reservoir cap & owner’s manual; Kawasaki models commonly use DOT 4)
  • Clear vinyl tubing to fit bleeder nipple
  • Catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid (to form a fluid seal)
  • Turkey baster or fluid syringe (for reservoir evacuation)
  • Wrench for bleeder nipples (open-end or box wrench sized to fit)
  • Clean rags, brake-clean spray, nitrile gloves, eye protection
  • Small flat screwdriver (to open reservoir cap clip if present)
  • Jack/stands or ramps that safely support the ATV if wheels must be off the ground

Model notes specific to the 2017 Brute Force 300 2X4

  • The Brute Force 300 2X4 has a small-capacity hydraulic brake reservoirdo not let it run dry during bleeding. Keep the cap on except when adding or observing fluid.
  • The system is compact; be careful not to overfill the reservoir or spill fluid on painted plastics. Brake fluid damages paint & plastics instantly.
  • Use fresh, unopened DOT-spec fluid. Older systems can be more susceptible to moisture; a full fluid change is strongly recommended every 1-2 years depending on use and storage conditions.
  • If your machine shows spongy brakes after bleeding, re-bleed and inspect the master cylinder, lines and caliper pistons for leaks or stuck pistons common with older units.

Preparation

  • Warm the ATV by running it briefly or riding slowly so fluid flows more freely. Park on a level surface, kill the engine, set the parking brake, and remove the key.
  • Clean the reservoir cap area thoroughly to prevent contamination. Remove the cap and diaphragm carefully and note the minimum/maximum marks.
  • Use a turkey baster or syringe to remove most of the old fluid from the reservoir; do not reuse removed fluid.
  • Top the reservoir with fresh brake fluid to the max mark. Keep the cap loosely on while working to reduce contamination.

Bleeding order and strategy

Bleed the calipers from the farthest from the master cylinder to the closest. On many Brute Force configurations this means: rear (if separate) then front; if the braking circuit is front only, bleed the right/front then left/front or vice versa depending on plumbing. If uncertain, identify the hoses from master cylinder to each caliper and start with the longest run.

Single-person vacuum or syringe method (recommended for clean bleeding)

  • Attach clear tubing to the bleeder nipple and route the other end into the catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid to keep a fluid seal.
  • Open the bleeder about 1/4-1/2 turn with the wrench. Operate the master lever or pedal slowly several times until you see bubbles then fluid that is uniformly clear and new color in the tubing.
  • Close the bleeder before releasing the lever/pedal to avoid sucking air back in. Repeat until no air bubbles appear.
  • Top the reservoir frequently to keep it above the minimum mark. Never let it run dry.
  • When finished with each caliper, tighten the bleeder securely, wipe any spilled fluid, and move to the next caliper.

Two-person pump-and-hold method

  • One person pumps the brake lever/pedal several times and holds it firmly.
  • The second person opens the bleeder nipple to let fluid and air escape, then closes it while the lever/pedal is still held down.
  • Release the lever/pedal and repeat until only clean fluid appears and no air bubbles escape.
  • Keep the reservoir topped throughout.

Master cylinder flushing (full replacement of old fluid)

  • After bleeding each caliper once, drain and refill the reservoir again with fresh fluid, then repeat the full bleed sequence. This ensures the master and every line have fresh fluid.
  • Continue until fluid coming out at each bleeder matches fresh fluid in color and clarity.

Final checks

  • Ensure bleeder nipples are tightened to a snug fit; wipe and clean all surfaces.
  • Top reservoir to correct level, replace diaphragm and cap, and secure any clips.
  • Operate the lever/pedalbrake feel should be firm with no sponginess. If soft, repeat bleeding and inspect for leaks or air ingress points.
  • Inspect hoses, calipers, and fittings for damage or leaks; replace any compromised parts before riding.
  • Dispose of old brake fluid per local hazardous-waste rules. Avoid spills on paint and plastics; if spilled, rinse immediately with water and clean brake-clean spray.

Troubleshooting & tips

  • If you cannot achieve firm brakes, check for a failing master cylinder or collapsed hose; these will allow air back into the system and require replacement.
  • Stubborn air sometimes requires gravity bleeding overnight with the reservoir slightly elevated, or the use of a pressure-bleeder tool.
  • Use only the DOT fluid specified by Kawasaki for your model. Mixing DOT 3 & DOT 4 is permitted chemically but avoid mixing DOT 5 (silicone) as it is incompatible.
  • Keep a log of fluid replacement dates and riding conditions. Heavy mud or water crossings justify more frequent fluid checks and changes.

After the job

  • Test brakes at low speed in a safe area before returning to normal riding. Confirm consistent stopping power and no leaks.
  • If you need parts, fluids, or a pressure-bleeder kit, MotoSport stocks OEM and aftermarket options specific to the 2017 Kawasaki Brute Force 300 2X4.

Performing a full brake-fluid change and careful bleeding will restore pedal feel and prolong system life. If you are uncomfortable with any step, have a certified technician perform the service.
